What is the difference between osmanthus and orange jasmine? A quick guide to telling them apart
1. Height
First, we should make clear that osmanthus is an evergreen tree or shrub, while orange jasmine is a small tree. So, compared with each other, the height of the first is much greater than that of the second. Specifically, osmanthus can reach a height of up to 18 m. However, orange jasmine is generally around 8 m tall.
2. Appearance
(1) Leaves: Let's start with the shape of the leaves. Osmanthus leaves are leathery, mostly oval, and some are long oval or lanceolate. However, the leaves of the second type of plant are different; they are mostly obovate. Their lengths are also different. The leaves of the first plant are about 7 to 14.5 cm long and 2.6 to 4.5 cm wide. But the leaves of the second plant are much smaller, about 1 to 6 cm long and about 0.5 to 3 cm wide.
(2) Leaf stalks: The main difference is length. The former's leaf stalks are 0.8 to 1.2 cm long, which is longer than those of the second.
(3) Fruit: First, the shape is different. The fruit of the first is oval, while that of the second is broadly ovate, sometimes spherical, and the sizes are also inconsistent; the former's is somewhat larger than the latter's.
3. Different flowering and fruiting periods
For the first plant, its flowering period is from September to early October, and its fruiting period is in March of the following year. The second plant's flowering period is from April to August, and its fruiting period is from September to December.
