What causes orange jasmine (Murraya paniculata) to drop its leaves

When this happens, there are roughly four possible causes. The first is light: if the light is too weak, this phenomenon is easily triggered. The second is temperature, mainly in winter; if the temperature is too low, the plant easily suffers cold damage, and then drops its leaves. The third is caused by waterlogging. It is not tolerant of waterlogging, and in standing water its roots easily rot, which can also lead to leaf drop. However, it may also be a normal phenomenon, the plant's own metabolism.

1. Light problems

This is a plant that loves light very much. If the light is insufficient, a series of problems easily arise. Not only leaf drop, but during the flowering period there may also be very few flowers and a faint fragrance. So providing it with sufficient light is very necessary. Generally speaking, it needs at least four or five hours a day. And there is no need to worry about direct sunlight, as it will not cause harm.

2. Temperature problems

This aspect is mainly in winter. This plant is not very cold-tolerant; it likes warm places. In winter, if you do not pay special attention to its care, and the room temperature is below 5°C and stays that way for a long period, leaf drop is very likely. For this situation, it is necessary to move it indoors for care and management. Specifically, at minimum it needs to be kept at 5 to 10°C. If conditions allow, it can be kept at around 20°C, but it should not be too high, as this will increase nutrient consumption.

3. Water problems

As we said above, it is not tolerant of waterlogging. So if water accumulates, it will inevitably trigger a series of bad consequences. The first is root rot, and the second is leaf drop. If you observe this phenomenon, you need to remedy it early. The most important thing is to control the amount of water. If there is no improvement, you need to take the whole plant out, rinse the roots, let them dry, then disinfect and replant.

4. Normal phenomenon

This situation also occurs mainly in winter. Sometimes, when winter temperatures are very high, its dormancy is broken. Then the leaves will naturally undergo renewal of old and new, with the old ones dropping and new ones growing.
