What is the difference between Taxus media and Taxus wallichiana var. mairei
1. Variety
The two differ somewhat in variety. Jokingly speaking, Taxus wallichiana var. mairei is the mother of Taxus media, because Taxus media was bred by crossing it with European yew. In terms of growth height and some other aspects, the former is a shrub, while the latter is also a tree. Generally speaking, the former can be used for long-cycle bonsai and is relatively stable in shape, while the latter is used for shorter cycles and needs frequent pruning.
2. Paclitaxel
The paclitaxel content of the two differs quite a lot; the former is four to ten times that of the latter. Generally speaking, in the latter this substance is mainly concentrated in its bark, meaning that the amount we can extract is very limited. But in the former, this substance is present in all parts of the plant; not only is the content in the branches and leaves abundant, but the content in the roots is even more astonishing. Because this substance is relatively precious and has a certain anti-cancer effect, many people prefer Taxus media, and as a result its cultivation range is now increasing greatly.
3. Growth rate
The growth rates of the two differ greatly. The former grows very slowly, about 10-plus cm a year, while the latter grows relatively fast, about 30 to 50 cm a year. So if you want a fast-growing yew, you can choose the latter.
4. Cold tolerance
Both are cold-tolerant, but the degree still differs. Generally speaking, the former can stay healthy at minus 25, while the latter can only withstand a temperature of minus 15. So on the whole, Taxus media can be considered high-end, but the latter also has its own advantages.
