Introduction

Green potted plants are essential accents for home life, beautifying the room, freshening the air, and soothing the mind. Keeping some flowers and plants at home has many benefits. "Flower Voice Potted Plant Diary, Issue 865" introduces you to a new type of potted ornamental flower.

Today's Featured Plant

Having introduced common flowers for many issues, this issue introduces one you have never seen. This flower is called "Schizanthus" (butterfly flower); its blooms look just like butterflies, colorful and vibrant, hence the name. It is a new type of ornamental flower, widely cultivated in South China, Southwest China and Taiwan, China, while in the north it is mostly grown as an indoor potted plant, and it is expected to become a rising star among early-spring potted flowers.

Schizanthus

Schizanthus is native to Chile in South America. Its leaves are peculiar, resembling fern fronds, and its flowers are like exotic orchids, rich in color, including red, bright pink, light purple, white and various edged bicolor forms, dazzling and eye-catching, with high ornamental value. It also has a long flowering period and a large number of blooms, making it an excellent indoor potted flower variety, and since its introduction to China it has been much loved by flower enthusiasts.

Potted Schizanthus

Schizanthus also has strong vitality and adaptability, tolerating cold, drought and poor soil, and is very easy to cultivate. For potting, it requires loose, fertile, well-drained soil, placed in a growth environment with plenty of sunlight, and watering should follow the rule of watering thoroughly once the soil dries out, with no watering needed while it is still moist. It can be cared for entirely with minimal attention, and is even easier to grow than pothos.

Bursting into bloom

Schizanthus is propagated by sowing seeds. Scatter the seeds into moist potting soil, cover with a little soil, and in about 10--15 days they will take root and sprout. From sowing to flowering takes only about 90 days, so the time cost of care is very low. Grown indoors under artificial conditions, it can bloom all year round, and bursting into a full pot is very easy. It is an emerging and very popular potted flower, and everyone can give it a try this spring.
