How often should a Kalanchoe be watered to be just right?

In winter, watering once every 7 days is generally enough, once every 3 days in spring, and once every 5 days in summer. However, we need to judge whether watering is needed based on the condition of the potting soil: insert a wooden stick into the soil and check whether there is moisture on the stick to determine whether it needs watering. The principle of watering is that even if you let it dry out, do not let it get too wet, otherwise the roots will very easily rot. Be careful not to rigidly set a watering schedule for it.

1. When watering is needed

When watering it, if the soil is not dry, there is no need to water; once you do water, you need to water thoroughly, otherwise root rot is very likely to occur. In general, you can use this method to determine whether it needs watering: insert a stick into the soil, and after taking it out, if you find water on the stick, it means the soil is still fairly moist, so it is best not to water.

2. The principles of watering

Although when watering it, its potting soil needs to stay moist, especially while its buds are growing, at certain times you need to be careful with watering, and it is better to let it dry out than to let it get too wet. The most important thing is that in the cold winter and the intense heat, when the temperature is lower than 8 degrees or higher than 35 degrees, you need to stop watering it.

In summer, evaporation is relatively fast, and people think the soil has dried out so they water often, but summer is also very humid, so although the surface of the soil looks dry, the inside may very well not be dry; if you water at this time, the soil will become damp and the roots will rot. If you need to water in winter, use water that is close to the indoor temperature, and it is best not to flood it, otherwise it will get frostbitten or the roots will rot.

3. Points to note

There is no need to rigidly set a watering schedule for it, because with different light, temperature, humidity and ventilation conditions, its watering needs differ, and the size of the root system itself, the size of the flower pot and the amount of soil will all affect how often you water. The best approach is, during the initial period, to check the dryness of the soil often and water thoroughly when the surface layer of soil is slightly dry; after doing this many times, you will gradually get the hang of the watering frequency.

Second, you also need to change things flexibly according to temperature and so on. It is a flower that can tolerate drought but fears waterlogging, so each time you should wait until the soil is completely dry before watering; for example, it is winter now, so watering it once every seven days is enough.
