Keep a small fish in the hydroponic bottle: plump roots, green leaves, and no bugs

A friend of Huahua has several pothos plants growing hydroponically at home, and they have been doing well recently. When visiting over the weekend, upon closer look, there were actually several small bugs moving in the water! Does everyone's hydroponic plants have small bugs? Go check quickly!

Why hydroponics attracts bugs

Water sources are high-risk areas for mosquitoes to lay eggs, especially still water surfaces.

Hydroponic plants are a relatively enclosed water source, and combined with the nutrients produced by plant roots, they are even more likely to attract mosquitoes.

As temperatures rise, mosquitoes become more active. How can we keep hydroponic plants in a fresh environment?

Change the water frequently to avoid bugs

Insect eggs need 2-3 days to hatch, so we need to change the water every 2-3 days to prevent eggs from being laid or hatching.

In the picture below, the water was not changed in time, and larvae appeared

When changing the water, pay attention to cleaning the plant roots and washing off the sticky attachments

If the plant has too many roots and some rotten parts, cut them off in time to prevent the rotten parts from breeding insects

Put it back into a clean container (the container can be soaked in boiling water to sterilize, or soaked in carbendazim for disinfection)

Note: You can also use cooled boiled water as the new water source

Keep fish in the water to eliminate small bugs

For some hydroponic setups where it is not easy to change the water, you can keep some small fish in the water. The small fish will use the larvae as food and help you eliminate them!

Vitamin B2 kills bugs

Mosquitoes hate the smell of vitamin B2. Putting a few vitamin B2 tablets in the water can "fumigate" mosquitoes away without harming the plants.

Keep it ventilated to avoid attracting bugs

Place hydroponic plants in a ventilated spot. This is not only good for plant growth, but can also prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.

Note that hydroponic plants generally do not need much sun. They can be placed on a shaded balcony with good ventilation

Or placed for a while on an enclosed windowsill

Clean more often to completely prevent bugs

To keep things clean and hygienic, usually wipe the leaves with a damp cloth, remove dead leaves, and keep the whole plant clean.

Spring and summer have many mosquitoes

Everyone should discover and deal with them promptly

Only then can the home environment be better
