Can Bougainvillea be repotted in autumn? Methods and precautions
I. Whether the flower pot can be changed in autumn
The timing of repotting is related to the owner's experience. The most suitable times to change the pot are spring and autumn each year. If you are experienced, it can also be repotted in other seasons. If repotting in autumn, you can remove more of the old soil and withered roots from the old pot. In summer and winter, you need to leave more of the original soil and remove fewer roots. Do not let its root ball fall apart; doing so is safer.
II. Steps for repotting
1. First, place the new pot in the original pot's position, so it does not need to be moved again. Put some tiles at the bottom of the pot and add some prepared soil. Then take the plant out of the original pot together with the soil around the roots.
2. Some soil should be removed from the root ball, until it is easy to move and fits just right in height when placed in the new pot, so that it can be put into the pot. Usually, half or one third of the soil on the root ball is picked off.
3. Some roots need to be cut off, and then it should be moved into the new pot that has already been lined with coarse sand and potting soil. Do not throw away the cut roots; they still need to be placed in the new pot. A thick wooden stick can be inserted into the pot to help hold it steady. Then fill the removed soil back into the new pot and bury the cut roots well; once they rot, they become very good fertilizer.
4. Repotting is finished at this point, and then water it thoroughly. It is very resistant to drought because its roots and stems store some water and nutrients. As long as the root ball has not fallen apart and at least half of the roots remain, even if the leaves droop for a few days, it will quickly recover its vitality.
III. Precautions
1. When repotting it, it is best to do so when the soil in the pot is relatively dry, because this makes it easier to remove the soil on the roots and the old roots. It is best not to repot shortly after watering.
2. It is best to remove half or one third of the original soil, and make sure the root ball does not fall apart; this is safer. If you are not very experienced, do not remove too much of the old soil.
