How to rescue a camellia after frost damage so it can resume growth

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
This plant likes a warm environment. In winter, if the room temperature stays below 5°C for a long time, it is very easily frostbitten. After noticing this, we first need to cover it with a plastic bag, then place it in a suitably shaded spot. Note that during this period it needs less water. After about a month of care, if its terminal buds begin to grow, it can generally recover to its original state.

1. Main symptoms of frost damage

In winter, if we leave it unattended the whole time, frost damage is very likely to occur. The specific symptoms are easy to observe. At first, the leaves of the plant look listless, then they slowly curl, and afterward become dry and withered, but they do not fall off. If this kind of symptom appears, it very likely cannot recover. At this point, you need to observe the condition of its terminal buds; if they are still upright and not soft, then there is still hope of recovery. Below are the specific treatment methods.

2. Specific steps

(1) First, cover the whole plant with a plastic bag, and be sure to cover the bottom of the pot as well. Put it in a shaded place, and make sure strong light cannot reach it.

(2) Water management is very important. Overall, it is better to keep it dry. When you observe that the potting soil is very dry, you can water it a moderate amount. If it is not dry, do not water. Otherwise, too much water will very likely cause the plant to die prematurely.

(3) After more than a month of special care, around April of the following year, if you observe that the aging leaves begin to fall off and the terminal buds also begin to sprout, then it may recover.

(4) At this time, you still must not let your guard down. You should still keep the bag on and continue to leave it in the same place. Water the same as before, keep it dry, and remember it must not be too wet.

(5) Around May or June, when new leaves have grown out, you can remove the plastic bag. However, you should continue to keep it in a shaded place. With this kind of care, it can generally return to normal around the plum rain season.
