These past couple of days, gardenias have hit the market in large numbers. The flowers are pure white, fragrant, and the price is lovely too, making them quite popular with flower lovers. Many people buy a pot to take home and display, but they find that the gardenia, which was bursting with blooms and had emerald-green leaves when purchased, has yellowing leaves and dropping flower buds after just a couple of days at home. What is going on? What should be done?

Why do newly purchased gardenias turn yellow?

You should understand that gardenias at wholesale markets are generally dug up by the roots from garden soil and then simply planted in a plastic pot. After the flower vendor ships them, they simply switch them to a new pot, meaning the gardenia you buy has just been repotted. Newly repotted flowers all go through a period of adjusting to the pot. The first few days after you bring it home happen to be a process of adapting to the environment and adapting the root system. If you do not care for it well during this period, it is very easy for bud drop and yellow leaves to occur. So how should we care for a newly purchased gardenia?

1. It cannot be exposed to blazing sun. Place it indoors in a bright, well-ventilated spot to acclimatise for a week, then resume normal care.

2. During the pot-adjustment period, keep the potting soil moist. It cannot lack water, but the potting soil must not become waterlogged. Keeping the soil slightly moist is enough.

When yellow leaves appear on the gardenia, what do we do? I recommend the most effortless method.

Dilute white vinegar and clean water at a ratio of 1:1000, then spray the leaves and water the gardenia roots with it. Use it three or more times in a row, and you will see the yellowing gardenia leaves slowly turn green.

Finally, if you want the gardenia you bought to keep blooming heavily and easily burst into a full pot, be sure to remember to keep it in a spot with ample light, and apply fertiliser once a month. The easiest way is to simply apply a compound fertiliser, but pay attention to the amount. Never use too much, otherwise it easily causes the gardenia to only grow leaves and not bloom.

That is all for today's sharing. Flower lovers, do you have any better care methods? You are welcome to share and discuss together.
