When Does Dianthus Bloom? A Detailed Guide to Its Flowering Period

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
It is distributed across many regions of China, except for the relatively hot South China area. It can be sown in both spring and autumn. When sown in spring, it can produce flowers by September and October of that year; when sown in autumn, it can bloom in May and June of the following year. From blooming to fading, the flowers generally last only 1-2 days.

I. When It Blooms

It originated in Northeast China and other areas, and is distributed along the Yangtze River, in North China, and even in parts of Southeast Asia. Because South China is relatively hot and unsuitable for its growth, it can survive in all other regions besides that one. Abroad, it generally grows in the Siberian region of Russia and in Korea. It can be sown in both spring and autumn. If sown in spring, it can bloom in September and October of that year; if sown in autumn, it can bloom in May and June of the following year.

II. How Long It Blooms

It is also called Luoyang flower. It belongs to the family Caryophyllaceae and the genus Dianthus. It is a perennial plant, but is generally kept for only one or two years. It differs somewhat from other flowers in the same genus in that from the time its flowers emerge to the time they fade, only one or two days pass.

III. How to Care for It

1. It is cold-tolerant and drought-tolerant, but fears intense summer heat. In summer it generally grows poorly or withers, so be sure to provide shade with a cover. It likes full sunlight and prefers a dry, windy climate. Use soil that is sufficiently fertile and well-draining, do not let it get too much water, and it likes plenty of fertilizer.

2. It can absorb SO2 as well as chlorine gas, so in places with more toxic gases, it is good to plant more of it. It is best to place it on a balcony, because if the light is too dim, it easily becomes leggy; stronger light intensity can make it grow more vigorously, with more and more vividly colored flowers.

3. Watering should be controlled. It is relatively drought-tolerant, so simply water it after the soil has dried out completely. It fears waterlogging; if the humidity is too high, its roots easily rot. Before it blooms, control the water supply first to suppress its growth, so that it can produce more flowers.
