When shopping for groceries, you often end up with a pile of plastic bags. Besides using them as trash bags, they can actually be used as gardening tools too! Whether for moisture retention, pest control or encouraging blooms, they're experts at everything!

One plastic bag, and flower buds pop out like crazy!

Some gardeners' kalanchoes are almost done blooming, while others still can't see even a hint of a bud. In fact, just one plastic bag can do the job of encouraging blooms!

How to use:

1. Prepare some black plastic bags, preferably larger ones that don't let light through.

2. Every day from 5 pm to 8 am the next morning, cover the flower pot with the black plastic bag, and poke a few small holes in the bag for ventilation.

3. Since kalanchoe is a short-day plant, this light-blocking treatment can encourage flower buds to grow. Also, Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) can be treated the same way.

One plastic bag, and fungus gnats die off completely!

Many gardeners are bothered by fungus gnats. What if you have kids at home and it's inconvenient to spray pesticide? A plastic bag solves it!

How to use:

1. Light a mosquito coil in the flower pot, cover the pot completely with a plastic bag, and secure it with tape or string.

2. After covering for 1~2 hours, remove the bag and open the window for ventilation, and you'll see plenty of dead fungus gnats in the pot and on the leaves!

One plastic bag, and cuttings root like crazy!

Many gardeners are taking cuttings now. If you use a plastic bag, it can help the plants root faster!

How to use:

1. Cover the freshly cut stems with a plastic bag, poke a few holes in the bag for ventilation, and open it up for a while at noon each day to air out.

2. For plants like pothos, camellia and azalea that like humid environments, covering them with a plastic bag reduces water evaporation, and the stems will grow roots faster!

One plastic bag, and grafting becomes easier!

Besides cuttings, plastic bags can also be used when grafting!

How to use:

1. Cover the freshly grafted plant with a large plastic bag, poke a few holes, and place it in a semi-shaded spot. Open it up for ventilation every day.

2. Wrapping the freshly grafted plant in a plastic bag increases humidity and keeps it warm. Freshly grafted plants are quite fragile, and this helps improve the survival rate!

That's all for the clever gardening uses of plastic bags.

If you find them useful,

don't forget to share them with other gardeners!
