How Often to Water a Snake Plant? Getting the Watering Frequency Right Helps It Grow Better

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Because growing environments differ, there is no fixed standard for how often to water. We can judge whether it needs water by the sound of the pot, the weight of the plant, and the plant's morphological characteristics: if the pot sounds crisp, water it; if not, don't. If it feels light, water it; if not, don't. If the leaf color is paler, water it; if not, don't.

1. The basis for whether to water

(1) By the sound of the pot: Before watering, we can first tap the wall of the flowerpot with a finger and listen to the sound it makes. If it is crisp, then the potting soil is dry, and we can water at this point. Conversely, if the sound is dull, the potting soil is very wet. Undoubtedly, in this case it should not be watered again.

(2) By the weight: Another method is to weigh the plant in your hand before watering. If it feels heavy, then it contains more water, and you should not water at this time. If it feels very light, then there is little water and the potting soil is dry. At this point, you can water it.

(3) By the plant's morphology: This is also a good method. Sometimes, the color of the leaves will look a bit pale, and if you touch them, they will feel relatively soft. At other times, the leaves all spread apart toward the surroundings. These situations all mean the soil in the pot is dry and we need to water. Sometimes, its leaves will look fresh and glossy, and stand upright without drooping. Then, at this time, the water is timely and sufficient, so there is no need to water.

2. Can a fixed standard be established?

In actual practice, there is no fixed standard for how often to water. This is because, in different places, the climate is different. So, at this time, we need to judge whether we need to water it based on the criteria we mentioned above. In other words, it is simply impossible to establish watering once every few days. When actually watering, we can make a judgment based on the overall situation of the several criteria above.

3. Points to note

This plant is very afraid of waterlogging, so it is better to let it be a bit drier than to water it too much at once. Otherwise, its roots will very likely rot.
