Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Clivia (Clivia miniata) has deep green, thick, fleshy leaves and an elegant appearance. In Chinese culture, it is a symbol of nobility and the character of a gentleman. Because of this, it is deeply loved and widely grown. However, when growing clivias, flower lovers often run into a headache-inducing problem: heart rot. Today, Huahua will teach everyone how to solve this tricky problem.

Why Does a Clivia Get Heart Rot?

Clivia heart rot is mainly caused by improper watering during hot seasons. Many flower lovers are not careful when watering and pour water into the plant's heart, which causes the heart leaves of the clivia to rot.

How Do You Save a Clivia with Heart Rot?

When rescuing a clivia, flower lovers can choose the appropriate method according to the degree of heart leaf rot, so as to avoid causing secondary damage to the clivia through an unsuitable choice of method.

Necrosis in the Center of the Heart Leaves

Solution:

1. Move the clivia to a cool, shady place and stop watering for 3 to 5 days, so that the soil in the pot dries out.

2. Use a clean blade to cut off the necrotic part of the leaves. Since thick liquid may flow out from the cut, you can lay the flower pot on its side.

3. Use a clean paper towel or cotton swab to absorb the liquid at the wound and keep the surface of the wound dry.

4. Sprinkle carbendazim on the surface of the wound, place it in a dry, ventilated, cool and shady spot, and let the wound dry. During this period, do not spray water on the plant body, and keep the surrounding environment dry.

Multiple Heart Leaves Become Necrotic from the Base

Solution:

1. First take the plant out of the pot, remove the clivia as a whole from the flower pot, remove the soil from the roots and wash them clean.

2. Pull off the rotted leaves until the point where the leaf and stem meet is exposed. Use a sterilized blade to cut away all the rotted part at the junction of the leaf and stem, and disinfect it with carbendazim.

3. Replant the disinfected and dried plant into the flower pot, paying attention to the depth: it only needs to be buried up to the root crown. Water the roots slightly, but not too wet, so as to avoid triggering root rot.

Severe Necrosis

Solution:

1. Cut off everything above the rotted part. If there are healthy leaves, you can keep them depending on the situation.

2. Disinfect: apply gentian violet to the cut surface and keep the cut surface dry.

3. Bury the disinfected and cleaned roots in the soil, not too deep. Wait for the roots to produce new shoots.

How to Avoid Heart Rot

After learning how to solve heart rot, that is not the end of the story. How to avoid heart rot and keep your beloved clivia from being hurt again is what matters most! Keep learning with Huahua~

Keep the Soil on the Dry Side

The clivia's own leaves are thick and fleshy and store a lot of water, and its ability to absorb water is relatively poor. Therefore, the soil should not be too wet; it should be kept on the dry side, so as to avoid the leaves rotting and turning black.

Strictly Control Water

When watering, be sure not to pour water on the leaves, so that water does not run down the leaves into the heart of the plant. At the same time, avoid exposing the clivia to rain; rainwater is relatively dirty and will cause the leaves in the heart to rot.
