Key Techniques for Growing and Caring for Potted Gardenia at Home

The gardenia's blooms are pure white and elegant, with a rich fragrance, and its leaves are bright and evergreen all year round. It is often grown by flower lovers in pots to decorate balconies or rooms. Gardenia can also be used to make tea or eaten. The cultivation and care techniques for gardenia are as follows:

I. Light Management

Gardenia likes light and tolerates slight shade, but dislikes direct sun exposure. It must be shaded in summer, and given more sunlight in the other seasons.

II. Watering Management

Gardenia likes a humid environment. Water the potting soil by the principle of "dry-wet cycle" -- water as soon as the soil dries. When the air is dry, also spray water on the leaves to raise air humidity. Reduce watering in winter.

III. Fertilization Management

Gardenia likes fertilizer. During the growing season, apply a thin alum fertilizer water once every 7-10 days. Alum fertilizer water is made from cake fertilizer and ferrous sulfate solution, and is acidic.

IV. Temperature Management

Gardenia likes a cool climate. The optimum growing temperature is 16-22°C, and the overwintering temperature should be above 5°C. In summer, when temperatures are high, it should be placed in a cool, well-ventilated spot.

V. Pruning Management

Cut off root suckers and overly dense branches, and shorten overly long branches to achieve good ventilation and light penetration and a beautiful tree shape; promptly remove spent flowers, and pinch the new shoots to encourage new branches and give the plant a fuller shape.
