The succulent plants grown by Grandma Hua of Luohe are so well cared for that I no longer dare call myself a succulent expert.

Five years ago, she came across succulent plants by accident and could not stop after that. From the first pot of succulents to thousands of pots now, she has been immersed in the world of succulents, content and at ease. She is Zhu Qingmei, a 62-year-old succulent expert this year, and netizens have also given her an affectionate nickname, "Grandma Hua."

Speaking of her earliest experience growing succulents, Zhu Qingmei said that in order to find loose, breathable soil suitable for succulent growth, she collected dry coal briquettes everywhere and even went to the suburbs to haul soil. To mix soil suitable for succulent growth, she crushed the dry coal briquettes, soaked them in water, and mixed them into the soil to ensure the soil was loose and breathable. It took a lot of effort, one could say.

When she bought succulents for the first time, Zhu Qingmei's daughter even laughed at her, saying, "You can't keep them alive, don't grow them." Zhu Qingmei refused to accept that: "I can't keep them alive? I don't believe it."

From "Huangli" (a succulent name) at 5 yuan per pot to "Debbie" at 70 yuan, Zhu Qingmei owned more and more succulent varieties, and so far there are about 300-plus varieties.

Growing succulents requires skill. From soil to temperature differences, and then to how much water to give, there are particular requirements for all of it. When it is time to "behead," which season is suitable for "leaf propagation," and how to control water to produce beautiful, well-formed "old stems" - these are all questions that "succulent friends" often discuss among themselves. While growing succulents, Zhu Qingmei also set up her own succulent exchange group, where many friends who like succulents discuss succulent growing methods.

Zhu Qingmei's current greenhouse is borrowed. There is a balcony on the top floor, and she used plastic film to build a sunlight shed. In winter, the temperature inside the flower shed can still reach over ten degrees, and in summer she covers it with a shade net, which can provide sufficient conditions for succulent growth. The more than ten-square-meter balcony is covered with flower racks and filled with all kinds of succulent plants, and the greenhouse is equipped with a water pipe for convenient watering at any time.

But Zhu Qingmei is not satisfied with the current situation. In order to build a better rooftop garden, she specially bought a new house with a very large balcony space.

"This greenhouse is too small now. A lot of them can't fit. I'll keep all these succulents and take them to the new house. Then I'll use succulents of different colors to make a color band. It should be very beautiful. When I have nothing to do, looking at my small garden will make me feel very relaxed and let me enjoy it a lot," Zhu Qingmei said.
