Bougainvillea not growing leaves? Here are the causes and solutions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Many flower lovers have bougainvillea that hasn't grown leaves for a long time. What should be done then? First, check whether it has been frostbitten. If so, help it by pruning away most of its branches and leaves. Then check whether the light and water conditions you give it are unsuitable for it. Usually, water it less and let it get more sun. Finally, check whether the fertilizer use is improper. We can apply some fertilizer relatively rich in the P element and try to limit fertilizer containing the N element.

1. Frostbite problem

(1) Specific cause: This aspect refers to not growing new leaves. If no insulation measures were taken to help it through winter, causing it to suffer frost damage, then its branches will likewise be frostbitten. Therefore, new leaves are not easy to grow.

(2) Solution: Observe it. If the branches appear green, then the plant is very likely to recover. At this time, we can prune it again. If it is not a bonsai, prune down to the base, leaving two or three thick branches, with length controlled at about ten cm. If it is a bonsai, then pruning down to ten cm above the main branch is enough. In addition, pay attention to water; do not overwater.

2. Light and water

(1) Specific cause: These two aspects are both related to whether it can grow leaves. If the amount and frequency of watering are both high, and the light is also poor at this time, the plant is very likely to not grow leaves. This is based on this plant's habits.

(2) Solution: Comparing the two aspects of light and water, light is still more needed. Whether outdoors or indoors, this characteristic is the same. Therefore, the plant should be given more sun. As for water, it is exactly the opposite; water it a bit less.

3. Fertilizer problem

(1) Specific cause: Whether the nutrient elements in the fertilizer are correct is also closely related to whether it grows leaves. If the type of fertilizer applied is wrong, then not growing leaves may also occur.

(2) Solution: Appropriately apply some fertilizer relatively rich in the P element. Try to limit fertilizer containing the N element. After application, pay attention to strengthening ventilation and light.
