Detailed Guide to Pruning Methods and Techniques for Sageretia Bonsai
I. Pruning Methods for Potted Plants Cultivated for Many Years
If it is a potted plant that has been grown for many years, especially once it has aged, to prevent its flowering branches from withering or dying off, refresh the soil every two to three years, preferably in February or March each year, and remove the old roots and branches. Its branches, buds and roots all have particularly strong growth capacity; the more the branches are pruned, the more vigorously they can grow.
II. Pruning Methods for New Stumps
If it is a newly dug stump, its planting season runs from the end of each year to March of the following year. Once the branches have grown to 10 to 20 cm, the unneeded branches can be removed, and the branches that are kept should also be appropriately shortened. This reduces water consumption, and its nutrients can be supplied in a concentrated way to the stump.
III. Pruning Methods for Branches with Wounds
If a branch has a wound for various reasons, do not remove its buds or cut off the branch too early. It should be allowed to grow freely, as this helps its wound close and heal naturally. Only after that can its branches be cut off.
IV. Points to Note
1. Prune at the right time, preferably in late spring or early autumn. In these two periods, the stump's sprouting ability is at its strongest and its growth is at its most vigorous. Branches that grow wildly, branches that are rather tangled, or diseased branches should all be removed promptly. Note that in relatively hot weather, newly grown buds are more easily scorched, which causes the leaves to curl. So after pruning, it is best to place it in a shady area and let its buds grow normally before exposing it to light.
2. Prune once every year after autumn, removing some branches and leaves that are too dense as well as all kinds of tangled branches and wildly growing branches. This keeps it in a certain shape and helps its branches and leaves grow more densely. Its sprouting ability is relatively strong, so it should be pinched back promptly.
