Does Ginger Flower? A Full Analysis of Why Ginger Flowers
I. Whether It Can Produce Flowers
There are many kinds of ginger. Generally, two are the most common. One is the ginger we buy at the vegetable market; it is very spicy and generally does not produce flowers. The second looks rather like canna, and its name is ginger lily (Hedychium); it can produce flowers. However, it flowers with difficulty, and only when the soil, temperature and other conditions are all very suitable can it bloom. Its flowers are spicate, the edges of the bracts are yellow, and they all enclose purple or green flowers; the flower stalk is about 30 cm.
II. Propagation
Because its flowers cannot set fruit, many people propagate it by division, cutting off a section of its rhizome; this section must have buds, and about 10 cm is enough. The distance between each plant is about 30 cm. Before planting, it is best to add plenty of base fertilizer, then water it heavily; after 20-30 days it will sprout and be able to grow.
III. Value
Its shape is very much like a pinecone, with scale-like bracts, and a small flower grows at the tip; it is also very beautiful.
It belongs to the genus Hedychium. The flowers are white and very elegant, and it can be used as an ornamental plant; it can also be eaten, being a newly emerging green food, and its roots, stems and fruits can also be used as medicine.
IV. Points to Note
In Lingnan, it can be planted all year round, but it has the greatest chance of surviving when planted in spring. If it is planted at Qingming Festival, it can produce flowers at Liqiu. If it has been planted for two years, its flowers grow more vigorously; by the third year, its roots and stems begin to gradually age, and then it will no longer bloom, so it needs to be replanted. If it is grown at home as a potted plant, because it often lacks soil and fertilizer, the plant grows relatively tall with more roots, and the growing environment is not very good, so it will not produce many flowers.
