When I visited a friend's home over the weekend, I saw her moss rose "flower tree" blooming again, and her bougainvillea had produced a "five-colored ball," with green leaves and vivid flowers that made it impossible to look away. It really looked awesome. Little Flower quietly tells you, growing it like this is not hard either, one trick and it is done!

Bougainvillea producing flowers of many colors is actually achieved through grafting, that is, grafting branches of bougainvillea that bloom in different colors onto the same plant, and once they survive, this effect is achieved.

Spring and summer are the growing seasons for bougainvillea. Grafting at this time gives a high survival rate.

Use a perennial, healthy, thick, well-grown bougainvillea as the rootstock.

When collecting scions, choose parts with sufficient light, and select the current year's healthy, thick, well-grown young branches or semi-lignified flowering branches with plump buds.

The method is as shown in the figure below.

For grafting bougainvillea of different flower colors, the method most favorable for graft survival is an ancient yet main method, cleft grafting. Use scions of various different flower colors, with thickness similar to the rootstock branch and length about 3-4 cm. To reduce water evaporation from the scion, the leaves need to be cut off, or more than half cut off with a small part left, to improve its survival rate.

After grafting, it can be placed directly in the sun, but avoid the scion being exposed to rain for a long time. Generally, buds can emerge in about 10 days.

Care is as follows.

1. After the graft survives, according to the condition of different scions, generally remove the wrapping film after one month. Do not use heavy water or heavy fertilizer; heavy water and heavy fertilizer can only cause excessive growth of branches and leaves, resulting in fewer flowers or even no flowers.

2. Usually, follow the principle of "do not water if not dry, water thoroughly when watering" for watering. But to make bougainvillea bloom uniformly and produce many flowers, water control must be carried out before flowering.

3. It grows quickly, so during the growing period, pay attention to shaping and pruning to promote side branch growth and produce more flowering branches. Pruning is generally done 1 to 3 times, and should not be too frequent, otherwise it will affect the number of flowering times. After each flowering, promptly remove the spent flowers to reduce nutrient consumption.

For the soil requirement of cuttings, any breathable soil is fine, but base fertilizer must be well controlled. The surface layer for cuttings should not be too fertile, that is, within five cm of the cutting layer it is safest to have no fertilizer, because too much fertilizer will infect the wound and cause rot. Many that rot right after being inserted are caused by this. Remember this.

If moss rose is to bloom more, branching is indispensable, and pinching off the tips is the best way to promote branching. When the seedlings grow to 3 or 4 cm tall, just pinch off the tip of the main branch. Of course, pinching off the tips is not mandatory, but sometimes we need human intervention so that the plant can develop in the direction we want.
