Care Methods and Precautions for Oriental Lilies After the Flowers Fade

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Oriental lilies (Lilium orientalis) produce very beautiful flowers during their blooming period, but once the blooming period has passed they become rather fragile and need careful attention. First, all the withered branches and rotten leaves should be cut off to reduce nutrient consumption; second, the frequency and number of times you water them should be reduced; and finally, normal fertilizer application should be maintained, and you should not stop fertilizing just because the blooming period has passed.

I. Care methods:

1. Pruning:

Pruning after flowering is a very important step, as it directly affects the next year's blooming period. So after the flowers fade, we should promptly cut off the excess remaining branches and leaves, which can greatly reduce nutrient consumption. However, you may also keep some leaves appropriately, so as to avoid pruning the whole plant bare, which would affect its appearance.

2. Watering:

After the blooming period, the number of times you water must be reduced, otherwise it will have an adverse effect on the roots and stems. We can no longer water it as we usually do; instead, we should pay attention to the state of its potting soil and only water it once the soil starts to dry out.

3. Fertilizing:

Do not assume that Oriental lilies no longer need fertilizer after the flowers fade; in fact, after the blooming period they actually need normal fertilization to be given nutrients. When applying fertilizer, you must get the total amount right, and by no means apply too much, otherwise it will affect its growth cycle and condition, so simply fertilizing normally as usual is enough.

II. Precautions:

After finishing these care tasks, try not to touch the roots and stems of the Oriental lily with your hands in daily life, because the flower is somewhat fragile just after the blooming period; at this time you should let it have a buffer period to rest well, so that it can make it through the winter smoothly. In addition, when winter comes, try to stop watering and fertilizing; if you must water, observe the potting soil of the Oriental lily and only water once it has already dried out. You can also spray a moderate amount of water on the leaves from time to time, which will help the Oriental lily get through the winter safely.
