Reasons for Yellowing Leaves on Firethorn and How to Fix Them

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
If its leaves turn yellow, the soil may be too alkaline, so you can buy some ferrous sulfate and apply it; if the temperature is too low, raise it appropriately; if it lacks light, move it to a spot with plenty of light; if it has gone too long without fertilizer, feed it in time and make sure to repot it once every one to two years; if it was planted improperly, it is best to transplant it again in spring or autumn.

1. Causes

1. Environmental problems

It prefers slightly acidic soil, so if the soil and water used for planting are on the alkaline side, its normal growth will be affected. The indoor temperature should also ideally be above 10 degrees, and light should be abundant; if it regularly gets no sunlight, it will also drop its leaves and turn yellow.

2. Long-term lack of fertilizer

If it is an old plant that has been grown for too long without the soil being renewed, the nutrients in the soil become depleted, and as the roots grow larger, a thick root mat forms around the edge of the pot, causing the roots to separate from the soil. The roots age and can no longer meet the needs of the firethorn, and its branches will die back. The first sign is that the leaves become very thin and very yellow, and then the leaves and branches shrivel into dead wood.

3. Improper planting

If the seedling is relatively large and was not handled well when moved into the pot, or if too much was cut off when trimming its roots, leaving too few fibrous roots, it will be unbalanced, water and nutrients will be insufficient, and the leaves will turn yellow.

2. Solutions

1. You can add a ferrous sulfate fertilizer, which is available at most flower shops. If the temperature is not high enough, first check whether it has died by scraping off a bit of bark; if there is moisture inside, it is fine, and you should raise the temperature in time.

2. If it lacks nutrients, you can fertilize it, and you can also repot it, but it is best to repot it once every one to two years. When doing this, cut away the dead and old roots inside and add fresh nutrient soil. At the very bottom of the pot you can add some fermented cake fertilizer, or you can dilute it and pour it in along the edge of the pot.

3. It is best to repot it in spring or autumn, leaving more fibrous roots and pruning its crown more heavily.
