How to Prune Aloe Vera: Detailed Guide to the Correct Methods and Steps

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Many people grow aloe vera, but they don't know how to prune it. In fact, the specific method depends on the purpose of pruning. If it is to beautify the plant, use a sterilized sharp knife to cut off the lower leaves along the base of the leaf; if it is to deal with root rot, you need to completely cut away the rotted roots; if it is to inhibit its growth, you can cut off some of the new shoots.

1. Different situations call for different pruning methods

If you want to prune it for appearance, how should you prune it to get an attractive plant shape? First, make sure you use the correct method for cutting off leaves. The knife must be sufficiently sharp, and it is best to sterilize it with alcohol first. Then start cutting along the base of the aloe leaf, keeping the cut as level as possible, and be careful not to scratch the root stem. After cutting off the lower leaves, the whole plant will look taller, rather than appearing dull when there are many lower leaves.

When the aloe roots show signs of rot, prune carefully. The rotted parts of the roots must be completely cut away, without leaving the slightest trace, which also leaves room and nutrients for new roots to grow. After cutting the roots, wait until the wounds have dried before planting in soil, otherwise the wounds will not heal well. Leaves that are withered or diseased also need to be cut off.

If the aloe is growing too vigorously, you can cut off the crowded leaves. When the tender roots have just sprouted, cutting off the area below the leaf buds can appropriately slow its growth rate.

2. Care after pruning

For a potted aloe after pruning, the soil should be chosen to be fairly fertile, to ensure the plant has sufficient nutrients. Second, the potting soil should have strong water retention; when the soil is moist, there is naturally enough water, which is what keeps its life processes running normally. In addition, the air permeability of the soil is also very important for its survival; soil that is not breathable will prevent the roots from breathing properly and easily lead to root rot.

However, if the air permeability is too good, nutrients will also be lost too quickly, so the sand and clay used for cultivation must be treated and made neutral before it can be used as a growing medium for aloe. In addition to the above conditions, you must also make sure there is no standing water in the pot, so do not water too much. Furthermore, it is best to place it somewhere not easily reached by direct sunlight.
