How to rescue a frozen rubber plant so it can recover

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Many plant lovers are worried about their rubber plant (Ficus elastica) freezing and do not know how to help it recover. Actually, it is very simple. First, we need to move it from the cold outdoors to a warm indoor spot, but the temperature must not be too high, around 10°C is enough; if it is too high, it may struggle to adapt. Next, we need to control watering and stop giving it too much water. Finally, we need to protect it from wind by placing it somewhere with little wind or covering it with a bag, and before long it will recover.

1. Room temperature

Although it has been frozen, we cannot put it directly under a heater or air conditioner, because that would scorch it. Generally, we just place it somewhere with a temperature above ten degrees, and it can recover on its own. In fact, its tolerance for cold is fairly strong; as long as the temperature conditions are not too harsh, it will not be damaged by freezing.

2. Watering

Because of the temperature, its growth cannot continue, so its demand for water is not that high either. At this time we should not water it often, otherwise its leaves will turn black and its roots will rot. It is also best to make sure the air humidity is not too high, because it actually prefers relatively dry air. So if it has been damaged by freezing, we must control the water well.

3. Wind protection

If it has been damaged by freezing, we should block the wind around it, especially cold wind, which can easily hit it and make its leaves drop. So we can place it in a good spot, or we can cover it with a bag, and when the temperature is higher and the weather is better, make a hole in it to let it breathe a little. Of course, we can also clip it shut with clips and then release the clips once the temperature is slightly higher.

4. Grafting

If the above methods do not help much, we can also adopt one method, which is grafting. Note that this method is not universally effective; when the roots have been affected, this method cannot be used.
