Causes of Blackening Ivy Leaves and How to Fix Them

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Many people like ivy because it stays green all year round, but if its leaves show signs of blackening, it will greatly affect our enjoyment of it. So how should we deal with this? First, we need to find the cause. If it is due to Phytophthora blight, we should pull out the entire affected plant and use agents such as metalaxyl or curzate for control; if it is gray mold, we should remove the diseased leaves and then treat it with chlorothalonil.

1. Phytophthora blight

Phytophthora blight is the most likely cause of its leaves turning black. If we do not know whether this is actually the cause of this phenomenon, we can look at how this disease appears. Generally speaking, most of the leaves of a plant affected by this disease will turn brown and begin to slowly rot, and along with this, the base of its stems and vines will appear dark green, gradually soften, then turn brown and finally black. In addition, the leaves in the area where this disease occurs will wither, and some tops will rot and may even become dead tips.

This disease usually occurs when humidity is relatively high, and it spreads very quickly. Therefore, once it is confirmed that it has this disease, we must promptly pull out the affected plants and increase the interval between waterings. In addition, when taking cuttings, we should also pay attention to selecting from branches free of pests and diseases, and make sure the growing medium has been sterilized. Cuttings should not be too densely placed, and both ventilation and light penetration must be ensured. When it rains, we must drain the water promptly, otherwise this disease is very likely to occur. At the very beginning of the disease, we can consider using agents such as metalaxyl or curzate for control.

2. Gray mold

The symptoms of this disease are water-soaked spots or black spots on the edges of the leaves, and in more serious cases this disease will invade the entire leaf. The way to treat it is to control watering and fertilizing well, and in addition remove the diseased leaves, then treat it with chlorothalonil.
