What to Do About Root Rot in Agave? Learn the Correct Way to Handle It
1. Water
(1) Specific cause: This is the most likely cause. If you know a bit about this plant, you will understand that it prefers a relatively dry environment. This is not only true of this plant; all plants in this family have this characteristic. So, if too much water is given, root rot is very likely to occur. This is especially true in winter, when it is dormant. At this time, if there is too much water, the situation will become even more serious.
(2) Solution: First, if the situation is not particularly serious, we can cut off the rotted parts first. Then it is just a matter of careful care. At any time and in any place, make sure the water is not excessive. During the growing season, you can water a little more as appropriate. However, after autumn begins, the amount watered needs to be gradually reduced. By winter, there is no need to water at all.
2. Temperature
(1) Specific cause: This aspect applies to winter. This plant itself likes warmth, and the suitable temperature is 15 to 25°C. In winter, it should also be kept above 5°C. Otherwise, the plant will suffer cold damage. After that, root rot may occur.
(2) Solution: Likewise, first cut off the parts that have already rotted. Then control the temperature and take appropriate cold-protection measures.
3. Pests
(1) Specific cause: Some insects bite and gnaw at the plant's roots, causing the roots to rot. For example, root mealybugs.
(2) Solution: If it is caused by pests, then you must seize the timing to prevent and control them. First, you can spray the matching pesticide. Then improve the plant's disease resistance and let it get more sun.
