Reasons for Blackening Leaves on Bougainvillea and Solutions

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
If its leaves turn black, it may be because it is being watered too much, or because the soil has become compacted from not being loosened regularly, or because it has contracted a disease. Different measures should be taken depending on the situation: if it is caused by overwatering, change the soil and reduce the frequency of watering; if it is caused by compacted potting soil, replace the potting soil; if it is caused by disease, spray medication to kill the bacteria.

1. Overwatering

If you always water it heavily, its roots are prone to rotting, which affects its absorption of nutrients and water. This leaves the leaves without a sufficient supply of nutrients and water, resulting in the blackening phenomenon.

Solution: If there is still standing water in the potting soil, remove the plant from the potting soil, cut off the roots that have already rotted, and plant it in fresh potting soil. If the case is milder, simply place it on a balcony to dry out. Afterward, pay attention to the frequency and amount of watering; it must not be too much.

2. Compacted Soil

If the soil is not loosened for a long time, it will clump together, affecting the plant's ability to draw nutrients from the potting soil. This causes the lower part of the main stem to produce no leaves, and the upper leaves also turn black.

Solution: You can make your own soil rich in humus. Crush red soil that contains no stones or sand, add some rotten vegetable leaves, put it in a bag, add a little water and let it ferment. This kind of soil is much better than ordinary soil, because after fermentation the red soil becomes matured soil, which is not only rich in nutrients but also loose and breathable, making it more suitable for planting. In addition, give it a larger pot, and add some fresh soil without damaging the original root ball.

3. Leaf Spot Disease

If its leaves turn black, another possibility is disease. If it has contracted leaf spot disease, at the beginning the spots are brown, with a greenish-yellow halo appearing around them. They then expand into round shapes and turn dark brown, and after that they become small black dots, so the leaves turn black.

Solution: If there are relatively few spots, you can apply Dakning cream (miconazole nitrate cream) on them and cut off the branches with relatively many diseased spots. Then spray with carbendazim, once every 7-10 days. If the case is relatively severe, after the first spray, spray again four days later, and then spray once a week, for three to four times in total, and the results will be very good.
