How to Grow a Potted Pothos from a Single Cutting

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
For most people, pothos is a wonderful plant, but it can be quite expensive, so how do you turn a single vine into a full pot? The answer is propagation by cuttings. First, cut off a section of stem, then prepare the potting soil for it. Spread a layer of small pebbles at the bottom, then pour in the potting soil, insert the stem cutting into it, and finally cover with soil and water. After a period of care, it will grow from a single cutting into a full pot!

1. Prepare the Materials

First, we need to prepare the necessary materials: one very healthy pothos vine, plus potting soil, a flower pot, and scissors.

2. Take the Cuttings

Once everything is ready, we begin cutting. We need to cut it into several sections, removing all the leaves and keeping only the stems. However, when doing this, we must make sure that each section retains a bud node, because only then can it grow.

3. Potting Soil

We also need to prepare the potting soil. Because it has relatively high requirements for soil, we need to mix it specially.

We recommend using leaf mold, because this soil not only contains plenty of nutrients for the plant to use, but also has good drainage, ensuring that water does not accumulate in the soil. If you do not have it, you can use sandy loam or a specialty potting soil for this plant.

In short, we must make sure the potting soil we choose has good drainage, because only then can we ensure it grows well.

4. Planting the Cuttings

Once everything is ready, you can officially start planting the cuttings. Generally, we should spread some pebbles below the nodes, so that the roots are not easily damaged and the drainage of the potting soil is improved. When planting, do not insert the roots too deep, or it will affect their growth.

5. Covering with Soil

After planting the cuttings, we need to cover them with soil, then water lightly, and afterwards place them in a fairly well-ventilated spot. Be careful not to let them be exposed to overly strong sunlight. If the potting soil can stay consistently moist, roots will grow in about twenty days.

This is a very low-cost method, and because it roots easily, the results are also quite good. So those who do not want to spend money can consider doing the cuttings themselves, and it will feel especially rewarding, because a single pothos vine at home can quickly be grown into a full pot.
