Can you water pothos with vinegar? Master the correct method

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Many flower growers have heard that vinegar can be used instead of water to water pothos. Is that okay? It is best not to do this. Although it contains about 5% acetic acid, and this component can appropriately supplement the nutrients needed for plant growth, the effect is not great, and some edible vinegars may also contain NaCl, which can affect the plant's uptake of nutrients from the potting soil.

1. Can you water it with vinegar?

It is best not to. There are now many claims that edible vinegar can replace water to water this plant, but this claim is incorrect. Although edible vinegar contains acetic acid, and this component can appropriately supplement the nutrients needed for plant growth, the effect is not great. Because it is an organic substance, using it is not as good as directly using some inorganic nutrients such as ferrous sulfate.

Furthermore, different types of edible vinegar do not contain exactly the same components, and some also contain NaCl, which is not so friendly to the plant. It can change the salinity and alkalinity of the potting soil and the osmotic pressure of the solution in it, and affect the speed at which the plant roots absorb nutrients from the soil.

2. Other uses

Although edible vinegar cannot directly replace water for use, it still has some other uses for the growth of this plant.

① Improve the soil. We all know that this plant prefers slightly acidic potting soil, and if we are unable to obtain this kind of potting soil, it can be very troublesome. At this time, edible vinegar can be used. Improve the soil and lower the pH of the potting soil to make it more suitable for the growth of this plant.

② Wipe the leaf surface. The leaves of this plant are glossy, fresh and green, and very beautiful, but they often accumulate dust or become dull and lose their luster. At such times, we can also use edible vinegar. We can dip cotton or toilet paper in some edible vinegar and wipe the surface of the leaves, and before long they will regain their shine.

3. How to use

① If using it to improve the soil, it needs to be dissolved in water at a ratio of 1 to 50, then poured into the potting soil and mixed evenly. Note that when using this method, the effect may not be immediate at first, but after a period of time, the pH of the potting soil will slowly drop.

② If using it to wipe the leaves, it should be dissolved in water at a ratio of 1 to 2, then dip cotton or toilet paper in some and gently wipe the affected leaf surfaces.
