How to grow Bryophyllum pinnatum (air plant) so it blooms? Detailed care tips

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
This green plant has a relatively low chance of flowering, and many friends have never seen what it looks like when it blooms. If you want it to flower, you need to take good care of it while it is still a small seedling, paying attention to every aspect of light, temperature, humidity, water and fertilizer, so that by winter it has a chance to show you its flowers.

I. When does it bloom

This plant can bloom. It usually flowers in winter, and its beautiful blooms can be seen from January to March. It prefers warm areas with water and light, has fairly good drought tolerance, but is not very cold-hardy. It is best to grow it in acidic soil with good aeration and drainage, and in the depths of winter the temperature should not drop below zero degrees.

II. How to grow it so it blooms

1. Pot and soil

If you want it to have a chance of blooming, you should take careful care of it while it is still a small seedling. It is best to transplant it in May or June. The simplest method is propagation from adventitious buds: carefully peel off the larger buds growing on the leaf edges, mix half leaf mold and half sandy soil, and plant them in a pot. Every spring you should renew the pot and soil to provide it with sufficient nutrients.

2. Water and fertilizer

During its growing season, water it a little more generously and keep the potting soil moist, but do not let water accumulate in the pot. When the temperature drops in autumn and winter, reduce the frequency of watering. By winter, when it is about to bloom, strictly control the water but never forget to replenish it. During the growth period, add fertilizer once a month. If it grows too tall, pinch off the growing tips and cut back the branches to help it produce many side branches.

3. Preventing pests and diseases

Always pay attention to the condition of the leaves, and carefully check whether it has powdery mildew or has been attacked by pests. If it is a disease, you can treat it with a 1000-fold dilution of thiophanate-methyl. If it is insects, you can use a 1000-fold dilution of dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate for control.
