How to propagate petunias by cuttings? Master the method for a high survival rate
1. Choosing the time
If it is grown indoors, then any time of the year is fine. However, in general, the survival rate is higher in spring and autumn. This is because winter is too cold and midsummer is too hot, both of which are unfavorable for propagation.
2. Choosing the substrate
To improve the success rate, this step is very important and must not be overlooked. We can mix sawdust and garden soil in a ratio of one to two. After mixing, stir thoroughly. Then, add some cow manure as a base fertilizer, but not too much - about the same amount as the sawdust will do. We can also use sand and peat soil, mixed evenly in equal halves. In addition, some perlite can be mixed in so that water drains well.
3. Choosing the container
Because it is a herbaceous plant, it will not grow very tall by nature. So there is no need to choose too large a container. A diameter of 15 to 20 cm is enough.
4. Choosing the material
You must not choose branches that are too old, this is certain. We should preferably choose healthy branches free of pests and diseases. After cutting them off, let the wounds dry. In addition, all the flowers need to be removed. Some of the leaves also need to be removed, leaving one third.
5. Cutting and its management
Put the substrate into a flower pot, then make a small hole in the middle. The depth should be 2 to 3 cm. Then, insert the branch we have prepared into this hole. After that, press the surrounding soil firm. Then, water thoroughly. In addition, keep it exposed to scattered sunlight. Then there is the temperature, which should be kept at 18 to 20°C.
6. Later-stage care
After waiting about half a month to 20 days or so, we can observe signs of rooting. If there is no wilting or rotting, then it has succeeded.
