Reasons for Yellowing Leaves on Hydroponic Peace Lilies and How to Fix Them

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
If the environment has changed, or the light, fertilizer, or water quality is unsuitable, or the plant is suffering from pests and diseases, a water-grown peace lily (Spathiphyllum) can develop yellow leaves. So how do you help it? Let's take a look.

1. Sudden Environmental Change

Cause: For a newly acquired peace lily, the environment has suddenly changed and it has not yet adapted, so the leaves easily turn yellow. For example, after a sharp change in temperature, humidity, or light, it has not yet adjusted and the leaves turn yellow.

Solution: When caring for a hydroponic peace lily, it is best to minimize changes in its growing environment. If a problem does arise, just wait for it to recover and adapt.

2. Unsuitable Light

Cause: If it is exposed to scorching sunlight, the leaves will be burned. Leaves facing the sun will develop small yellow spots, and the leaf edges will also easily die back, gradually turning completely yellow. Insufficient sunlight can also cause yellowing, especially in winter or early spring, when it needs good light and should not be shaded.

Solution: If the sunlight is too intense, move it to a windy, shady area. Measures should be taken when the light is too strong. If it has been kept in a shady area all along, do not suddenly expose it to scorching sun, or it will also develop yellow leaves or die back. In winter, it can be placed on a balcony for one hour, preferably around ten o'clock. At the same time, temperature must be controlled well. If it is difficult to control under special circumstances, it can be placed in an air-conditioned room to regulate the temperature difference.

3. Improper Fertilization

Cause: If there is too much fertilizer, fertilizer burn will occur: the tips of old leaves will turn yellow and die off, and if it is new leaves, the leaf surface will be uneven and not smooth. If there is not enough fertilizer, the roots cannot supply enough nutrients, and the leaves will also become weak and yellow.

Solution: Moderately reduce the fertilizer, using smaller amounts but more frequently. If the yellow leaves are caused by insufficient fertilizer, you can add nutrient solution to the bottle when changing the water, shake it gently to make it even, and increase the oxygen level, which can promote root growth.

4. Poor Water Quality

Cause: If the water in the bottle has been sitting for a long time and has gone bad, the roots will rot, and yellow leaves will also appear.

Solution: In spring and autumn, change the water once every five to seven days; in summer, every 3-5 days; in winter, once every ten days to half a month.

5. Pest and Disease Damage

Cause: If there is disease or pest damage, the leaves will also lose their luster and become yellow and shrunken.

Solution: You can buy specialized chemicals from the market and spray them on the plant. The dosage should be small, and you can spray several times.
