How exactly did the morning glory get its name?
So why did people give it such a name? It turns out its name has a story behind it. Long ago, in a place whose name is unknown, and at a time also unknown, a mountain suddenly appeared that looked like an ox lying prone, so people called this mountain "Funiushan" (Ox-Subduing Mountain). Below this mountain was a small village, and the villagers were not many. One household had a pair of twin sisters. Because the villagers were poor and had no money to buy oxen to plow the fields, they could only make some rather crude tools to till the land.
As for the twin sisters, they reclaimed wasteland both in front of and behind the mountain, planting with their own hands, and their days were more or less manageable. The two sisters were kind-hearted and willing to help those poorer than themselves. One day, the two sisters were digging the ground when suddenly they could not dig anymore. It turned out there was an especially hard object, and no matter what the two sisters did, they could not dig it open, so they sat to one side and rested a while. Suddenly, that hard object burst open. The older sister saw something glittering, and they took it out and examined it carefully. It was actually a silver trumpet.
The two were just puzzling over it when an old man came over and said to them with a smile, "This mountain was sent down by the Jade Emperor to hold down one hundred spirits. Because these spirits cultivated well and transformed into human form, but then did evil unchecked in the human world, the Jade Emperor subdued them and pressed them down here. As of today it has already been nine hundred years, and by tomorrow they will turn golden and will never harm the human world again. This trumpet is the key to this mountain. Tonight you will hear sounds coming from inside the mountain, and then golden light will shine out. That place is the mountain's eye. Just insert this thing into it. But you still have to remember the incantation... Then the mountain's eye will grow larger, and you can go in and carry out a golden ox, and then you will never have to worry about food or drink for the rest of your lives. This key only appears once every nine hundred years, and after dawn it will be useless. Whatever you do, do not get shut inside, or you will certainly die. Also, this trumpet must not be blown, or all one hundred oxen will come charging out."
The two knew he was an immortal, and happily went home, planning how to carry the golden oxen out. The older sister wanted to carry all one hundred out and give them to the poor villagers, while the younger sister wanted to blow the trumpet to bring the golden oxen to life and give them to the villagers. In the end, the younger sister's idea was agreed upon.
At night, sure enough, the mountain's eye grew larger, but it was only big enough for one person to enter. The older sister went in, and the younger sister followed in afterward. As soon as the trumpet was blown, the golden oxen came to life, but when the last ox came charging out, the sun slowly rose, and the mountain's eye also shrank. The two sisters pushed at the ox's rear, but they simply could not move it.
The villagers all pulled together to drag out the last ox, but the ox, hurt from being pulled, panicked and kicked, leaving the two sisters inside the mountain. The trumpet at the mountain's eye turned into a flower, so in memory of those two sisters, this flower was given this name.
