When Does the Dahlia Bloom? A Detailed Guide to Its Flowering Period
I. The Flowering Period
In fact, in a suitable location, this plant can bloom all year round, and its flowering period is very long. However, in regions with distinct seasons, its flowering period is generally concentrated from May to October.
II. Care During the Flowering Period
1. Soil mixing. To care for it properly until it produces beautiful flowers, we first need to adjust the growing medium. You can choose to mix some garden soil, coal cinders and fine sand together to make the growing medium, and at this point you can also appropriately add some leaf mold. Because it fears waterlogging, and if the soil is heavy and clayey, water accumulation after pooling can easily cause its roots to rot. Therefore, the mixed soil must be loose and fertile, and able to drain effectively. This plant has a long flowering period and needs a great deal of nutrients, so only fertile soil can meet its needs for blooming.
2. Light arrangement. This plant needs a great deal of light for its growth. In the three seasons of late autumn, winter and spring, because the surrounding temperatures are not too high, it can be left directly exposed to the sun, which benefits its own biological processes, helping it better form flower buds and then bloom. In the hot summer, we roughly need to shade about 30 percent of the sunlight for it. After it blooms, it can be placed indoors for viewing, and it should be placed beside a southeast-facing door or window, which can delay its flowering period and also increase the number of its blooms.
3. Temperature arrangement. This plant very much likes cool and cold temperatures and fears hot temperatures most of all, so generally it will gradually stop growing when summer arrives; at the same time, it cannot accept temperatures that are too low either. When the temperature is lower than the humidity, it will begin to go dormant. Generally speaking, the most suitable temperature for it is 15°C to 28°C. As long as the daytime temperature does not exceed 28°C, and the temperature difference between day and night is relatively large, flower buds will differentiate more easily.
