What are the reasons a cherry blossom won't bloom? A full analysis to help you

Cherry blossom (Cerasus sp.) has fairly strong cold resistance and drought tolerance, but it cannot withstand smoke or strong winds, so coastal areas are not suitable for growing cherry blossoms. Recently a gardener raised a question: they have grown a cherry tree on their rooftop for three years already, and every year it is full of lush branches and leaves, looking very vital, but it simply will not bloom. What is the reason for this?

1. Improper fertilisation

To get cherry blossoms to bloom, you should apply phosphorus and potassium fertiliser, and definitely not nitrogen fertiliser; moreover, if too much is applied, the nutrients are all absorbed by the leaves, which hinders flower development, so the foliage grows very lush and green but there are always no flowers opening. You can make your own fertiliser: leftover bones and fish bones after a meal are all very good raw materials, and although it smells terrible after composting, the effect is first-rate. You can also buy a compound fertiliser containing phosphorus and potassium and just feed it twice a year: once in winter, using something like chicken manure, and once after the flowers drop, using something like ammonium sulfate.

2. Improper transplanting

If you accidentally break the roots while transplanting, the flower buds have no strong roots to draw the nutrients they need, so they cannot continue to develop, and it is very hard to see it bloom. So if you plan to transplant, be sure to keep soil around the roots so the tree is not damaged.

3. Insufficient light

Temperate and subtropical zones are the climates cherry trees love; in these two places the sunlight is not very intense but it is very warm, and the sun can be seen all year round. So if you grow cherry blossoms at too high a latitude, where the climate is very cold, it cannot receive the sun and does not get enough sunlight to supply nutrients for its growth; the tree will look very unhealthy, and although the tree will grow, the flowers will be very sparse or even absent.

4. Too much or too little water

During the growth and development period of a cherry tree, you should often spray water mist around the tree to keep it in a sufficiently moist environment; only when the surrounding humidity meets the standard will its normal growth and development not be affected. At the same time, after the tree blooms, remove the flowers that are about to drop, so its blooming period will last longer. You must control watering well: if there is too much water, the roots rot and this also hinders the flowers from opening; if there is too little water, growth is restricted and it will not bloom either, so water really is a very important factor.
