What to Do When a Phalaenopsis Orchid Loses Its Leaves? Causes and Solutions
I. Causes
1. Too much water. Although the aerial roots of this plant have a very strong absorption capacity and can absorb water, oxygen and so on, if it is watered too much, it is very easy for the roots to have difficulty breathing, leading to suffocation and then root rot. So when watering this plant, you should water it with a relatively fine-spouted watering can when the soil we can see with the naked eye has dried out.
2. Pests and diseases. This plant is prone to soft rot, scale insects, anthracnose and so on. And these diseases and pests can easily cause its leaves to drop.
II. How to Deal with Improper Watering
1. Once leaf drop occurs, do not water it for half a month, and only after half a month water it again using the soaking method.
2. That is, we can prepare a somewhat larger container, fill the container with water, and then place the flower pot with the plant in it into this container full of water. The water level should preferably reach two-thirds of the height of the flower pot, so that the water can seep into the flower pot little by little. When the water in the flower pot can make the surface of the soil moist, we can consider it done. But how do we know? You can touch the soil with your hand; if it feels moist, that is enough.
3. After that, about every ten days we should water it once using this method. Every second time we use this method, we can add a little more water, and by the third time, the amount of water added should preferably be the same as the second time.
III. How to Deal with Diseases and Pests
1. You can treat the problem specifically. If you can spot a plant that has become diseased, you should immediately identify the source of the infection, remove the diseased leaves, and preferably isolate it to prevent this disease or pest from spreading to healthy areas.
2. Spray it with a pesticide targeted at the problem to effectively kill the insects.
