  Fisheries are an important part of China's broader agriculture. Since reform and opening up, China's aquaculture has achieved unprecedented development, and has become the world's largest aquaculture country and an important growth point in the development of the broader agricultural economy. Since entering the 21st century, China's aquaculture has continued to maintain a strong development momentum, making outstanding contributions to prospering the rural economy, expanding employment, improving people's quality of life and resolving the "three rural issues," while also playing an important role in the sustainable use of China's marine and freshwater fishery resources and in safeguarding "food security."

  In recent years, China's aquaculture research has produced outstanding results, with theory and technical levels improving in tandem, providing strong support for technological progress and industrial development in aquaculture. However, along with the rapid development of the aquaculture industry, a series of new problems have also emerged, such as disease outbreaks, germplasm degradation, water pollution, declining farming returns and worrying product quality and safety. Coupled with the impact of technical barriers repeatedly reported in the international aquatic product trade market, the sustainable development of China's aquaculture industry is facing unprecedented challenges.

  Science and technology are the primary productive forces. In order to promote industrial development and help fishermen and farmers increase their incomes and become better off, it is necessary to popularise and promote new scientific and technological achievements and to introduce, digest and absorb advanced foreign technical experience, so as to facilitate the continuous improvement of the level of science and technology before, during and after production. The publication of agricultural science and technology books carries the social responsibility of popularising agricultural science and technology knowledge and promoting the transformation of achievements into productive forces. They are good teachers and helpful friends to fishermen and farmers, as they can guide aquaculture operators in solving practical problems in production, and can also provide consumers with basic knowledge of healthy aquaculture, so as to strengthen communication and understanding between producers and consumers. To this end, the author has compiled this series of aquaculture feature articles for the reference and exchange of professional readers.

  The content of this feature has two major characteristics:

  First, it has a clear sense of the times. Aimed at the needs of aquaculture operators, it solves the difficult problems currently arising in production and introduces the new aquaculture species with the best prospects and new healthy aquaculture techniques for existing leading species, so as to help raise the level of the entire industry;

  Second, it is forward-looking. It strives to promote to people in the industry the new concepts, new technologies and new models of taking the scientific outlook on development as the guide, improving "quality and safety" and "accelerating the transformation of the economic growth pattern," and advancing industrialised and standardised production management. At the same time, in line with the general direction of modern agriculture construction, it popularises models such as land-based closed recirculating aquaculture, sea-based facility fisheries, artificial reefs and ranching-style aquaculture, making every effort to advance the construction of China's modern aquaculture fisheries. This series of books covers the introduction of main cultured species, the biological and ecological characteristics of new species, artificial breeding, seedling and fry rearing, aquaculture management, nutrition and feed, water quality regulation, disease prevention and control, aquaculture systems engineering, and processing and transport. The publisher strives to ensure the scientific nature, practicality and operability of the series. In line with the purpose of enabling fishermen and farmers to "understand it, apply it and keep it," it adopts a richly illustrated format with accessible language that is easy to understand, and some technical processes are even supplemented with practical examples, so that friends in the industry can read and understand it with ease. The aquaculture feature series is good news for aquaculture operators, and we hope it can become a close friend to people across the industry and a good helper for becoming better off through science and technology!
