What is the difference between Western azalea and azalea? A quick guide to tell them apart
1. Place of origin
The Western azalea has a special name, and this name is related to its place of origin: it is called the Belgian azalea. This also explains its most essential origin. Generally speaking, it is easy to buy Western azaleas in the north, while in the south it is easy to buy ordinary azaleas.
2. Appearance
We should know that the former is relatively short; its height is comparable to that of an adult, in the range of one meter to two meters, and its branches are rather sparse. The ordinary azalea is not the same: although it also grows quite short, it is relatively lush and full.
3. Leaves
The leaves are quite different. The former's leaves have the advantage in thickness, and their color is also relatively deep. The latter's leaves are relatively thin, and their color is not deep. In addition, the number of hairs on the former can almost be counted, and it is rather dull, while the latter also has few hairs but is clearly glossy. Besides this, the former's leaf shapes are more varied, including smooth leaves and long leaves, and it also has twisted leaves, while the latter's are relatively uniform.
4. Flowers
The former blooms in April and May, and is double-flowered. The latter's flowers are very small, and it blooms in April; its flowers are numerous and dense, and generally it is made up of single petals or tubular petals; double flowers exist but are very few.
5. Propagation and cultivation
Because the former is relatively delicate, the only propagation method we provide for it is grafting, while for the ordinary one the method we generally adopt is cuttings.
