It is now the season when lychees are abundantly available on the market, and many people enjoy eating them. China's main lychee-producing regions are mainly Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and other places. Lychees have a long history in China; as early as more than two thousand years ago, there were records about lychees. Lychees from different regions come in different varieties, and different varieties of lychees have different tastes. So today, the editor of Nongxun Network will introduce to you several common varieties of lychee.

1. Feizixiao

I believe everyone is deeply impressed by Du Mu's poem: "A rider in the red dust makes the imperial concubine smile, and no one knows it is the lychees coming." Indeed, Feizixiao is of excellent quality and belongs to the high-quality lychees, usually ripening during May to June. This kind of lychee grows relatively large, has thick flesh, and the seed is not large either.

However, when buying this kind of lychee, note that if the skin of the entire fruit has turned completely red, the quality will decrease, and it is not suitable for purchase at that time. Generally speaking, Feizixiao tastes best when the skin is 1/3 to 1/2 red.

This variety originated in Guangdong. It is cultivated in Zhongshan, the outskirts of Guangzhou, Conghua, Zengcheng, Dongguan, Nanhai, Shunde, Jiangmen, Gaozhou, Huaxian (Huadu), Bao'an Nantou in Guangdong, as well as Guangxi, Taiwan, China, Hainan and other places.

2. Gualv

Gualv is one of the best lychee varieties, mainly produced in Zengcheng, Guangdong.

This variety is a superior variety among the lychees of Zengcheng, Guangdong, and is also one of the famous varieties of Guangdong lychee. It is named because there is a green line in the middle of the lychee. Gualv has a large and slightly flat seed, extremely crisp and refreshing flesh, a clear sweet taste with a slight fragrance, and excellent quality; the fruit is relatively storage-resistant.

The existing plant of this variety is a new tree that sprouted from the base of the tree after technicians rescued it when the ancient tree died in 1979. It is a rare variety of lychee. In the early 21st century, a single fruit was once auctioned at an astronomical price, breaking the Guinness World Record.

3. Nuomici

Nuomici lychee, referred to as Nuomici, also called Mizhi, and known in ancient times as Shuijing Wan, is one of the lychee varieties. This variety has a fruit shape that is somewhat heart-shaped, with a crooked stalk, a relatively large fruit, bright red color mixed with waxy yellow, indistinct skin protrusions, milky white, semi-transparent, thick flesh, a tender and smooth texture, an extremely clear sweet taste, a slender small seed, and high natural sugar content. It contains a variety of amino acids, trace elements and vitamins essential to the human body, and has multiple nourishing functions. It is a rare fine fruit of Lingnan. In places such as Dongguan, this variety is known as the "king of lychees."

However, Nuomici comes on the market relatively late, generally ripening only in early June or late July each year.

Nuomici lychee is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi and other places, among which Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zengcheng, Conghua and Gaozhou are the main producing areas.

4. Guiwei

The outstanding characteristic of Guiwei lychee is that it carries a faint osmanthus aroma, and the seed is very small. Its taste is very sweet, and its flesh is crisp and refreshing, making it very popular. Guiwei generally ripens and comes on the market successively in late June each year. Guiwei is not considered large in size and is medium-sized.

There is a variety among Guiwei called "Yatoulv," which is a premium product among Guiwei and is usually borne by older trees. Guiwei's flesh is relatively crisp and refreshing. Because it has the flavor of osmanthus, people feel it is especially clear and sweet when eating it, and the seed is also relatively small.

This variety is one of the main varieties commonly cultivated in the outskirts of Guangzhou. It is also abundant in Zengcheng, Dongguan, Xinhui and other cities. It is also cultivated in Zhongshan, Panyu, Nanhai, Shunde, Qingyuan, Conghua, Gaohe (note: namely Gaoming District and Heshan City), Kaiping, Bao'an, Gaozhou, Puning, Chao'an, Lianjiang and other places, among which the product from Luogang Town in Guangzhou is the most famous.

5. Sanyuehong

Sanyuehong is the earliest-maturing variety among lychees. Not long after Qingming each year, Sanyuehong begins to come on the market successively.

This kind of lychee has a relatively large seed, yellow-white flesh, and a taste that is sweet with a little sourness, so some people who do not like sour foods are not particularly fond of Sanyuehong. However, the quality of this lychee can also be considered medium-grade.

This variety is distributed in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong, the western Guangdong area, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan (for example, Pingbian County) and other places.

6. Heiye

Heiye lychee is also called Wuye lychee, mainly because its leaves are dark, hence the name. The fruit is medium-sized and uniform in size. The skin is purplish-red, the top of the fruit is bluntly round and slanted, and the shoulder of the fruit is crooked, with one side high and the other low.

Although Heiye lychee is not favored by diners because of its large seed, because of its rich fragrance, many lychee ice creams or cheeses use Heiye lychee for flavoring.

This variety was originally distributed in Guangdong. Later, through promotion, it became a local variety widely planted in the southern subtropical coastal areas of Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Taiwan, China and other places.

7. Baila

The high-quality early-maturing Baila is also called Bailazi lychee, and is a high-quality mid-early maturing variety. The leaf surface is glossy, with a waxy layer, and the veins are obvious. The fruit is nearly heart-shaped or oval, the top of the fruit is blunt, the shoulder of the fruit is flat with one side slanted, the skin is bright red, thin and soft, the protrusions are raised, and the cracks are clearly visible. The flesh is waxy white, with a clear sweet taste, plenty of juice, thick flesh and a small seed, with a special fragrance, and the seed is medium-sized.

Baila lychee is mainly produced in Gaozhou, Dianbai and other counties and cities in Maoming.

The above are the common varieties of lychee. Lychees should not be eaten in large quantities, as they easily cause internal heat, and because lychees have a high sugar content, eating them on an empty stomach will irritate the gastric mucosa, so they should not be eaten on an empty stomach either. Friends who like lychees are advised to control the amount when eating them and not eat too many at one time.
