When we grow crops or flowers, trees and seedlings, we all pay attention to soil requirements. Generally, the more fertile the soil, the better the vegetables grown from it. Therefore, many people use growing media when planting. So what growing media are there? What are their specific roles and prices? Let's take a look below.

1. What growing media are there

There are many types of growing media, including seedling medium, nutrient soil, peat soil, humus soil, flower soil, discarded edible mushroom sticks, coconut coir, mushroom sticks (without spawn), peat moss, sawdust, planting soil, sphagnum moss, expanded clay pebbles, perlite, vermiculite, Luqing medium, crystal soil, akadama soil, lotus seed shells, pond mud, wood shavings, kanuma soil, and so on.

2. The roles of growing media

1. Vermiculite: contains relatively high amounts of nutrient elements such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, which can be absorbed and used by crops. It has strong water absorption capacity.

2. Perlite: perlite is formed by heating gray volcanic rock (aluminosilicate) to 1000°C until it expands. It has the advantages of low bulk density, 93% porosity, and relatively good air and water-holding capacity.

3. Sawdust: cheap, with good structure, and generally can be used continuously for 2-6 crops.

4. Peat soil: common peat media need to be mixed with media such as sand, vermiculite and perlite. Peat is distributed in relatively large amounts in northern China and is formed by the long-term natural accumulation and decomposition of plant stems and leaves.

5. Humus soil: humus soil contains humus, which can slowly decompose in the soil, releasing nutrients mainly composed of nitrogen and sulfur for plants to absorb, while also releasing carbon dioxide for plants to carry out photosynthesis.

6. Coconut coir: coconut coir is a kind of fiber powder from coconut husks. It is a purely natural organic medium, and coconut coir after processing is very suitable for cultivating plants.

7. Nutrient soil: in order to meet the growth needs of seedlings, nutrient soil is specially formulated and contains a variety of mineral nutrients. It has the advantages of being loose and airy, retaining water and fertilizer, and being free of pests and diseases.

3. Prices of growing media

Different growing media have different prices. At present, discarded edible mushroom sticks in Lucheng District, Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province are 100 yuan/ton, sawdust in Lengshuitan District, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province is 100 yuan/ton, pure natural humus soil in Fuyuan County, Qujing City, Yunnan Province is 300 yuan/ton, peat soil in Qingyuan Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun City, Liaoning Province is 300 yuan/ton, nutrient soil in Conghua District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province is 160 yuan/ton, sawdust in Shenxian County, Liaocheng City, Shandong Province is 400 yuan/ton, and seedling medium in Yongding County, Longyan City, Fujian Province is 333 yuan/ton. This price comes from the wholesale prices on Nongxun.com, and the actual price is subject to the place of origin.

The above is an introduction to growing media. In our daily planting process, if we want crops to grow well, media are indispensable. Is there anything else you would like to add about growing media?
