Passion fruit has been an internet-famous fruit in recent years: tasty and juicy, sweet and tart, its juice gives off the aromas of many kinds of fruit, and the fruit is deeply loved by men and women, young and old alike. As market demand has grown, the number of passion fruit growers has also increased. If you want to enter the passion fruit growing business, do you know which passion fruit varieties are grown in relatively large amounts in China? Let's find out below.
1. Tainong No. 1
Tainong No. 1 is a hybrid variety with the purple type as the female parent and the yellow type as the male parent. It has quite vigorous growth and slightly stronger moisture tolerance and disease resistance. The flowering period runs from mid-to-late March to late November. The rind is slightly smooth and a little thinner than that of the yellow type, and the fruit can weigh up to 120 grams. The juice is deep yellow, strongly aromatic, and slightly low in acidity. It is suitable for planting in cool summer regions and is the main commercial variety in Southeast Asia.
2. Zixiang No. 1
Zixiang No. 1 is said to have been selected and bred from grafted seedlings of Tainong No. 1, and its growth characteristics are basically similar to those of Tainong No. 1. Ripe fruit can be picked from mid-June each year to early February of the following year, with the most concentrated harvest periods in July and October. The fruit is oval, and the rind is purplish red and slightly hard, with an average single-fruit weight of 75 g, slightly smaller than Tainong No. 1. It is fairly adaptable and can be cultivated in areas with an annual average temperature above 18°C and an average temperature in the coldest month above 8°C.
3. Mantianxing
Mantianxing was introduced from Indonesia to Taiwan, China, and improved and bred there; it gets its name from the star-like speckles on its rind. The Mantianxing fruit is relatively large, with an average single-fruit weight of 150 grams ; it is high in sweetness and has a juice yield of up to 40%, but it has no aroma. It stores and ships relatively well and is suitable for fresh eating. This variety is a tropical variety with poor cold resistance, so extra attention is needed when introducing it to areas with frost.
4. Xiangmi passion fruit
Xiangmi passion fruit is a relatively popular variety in recent years, and because its fruit surface is golden yellow all over, it is known as the golden fruit. This variety has relatively abundant juice and high sweetness, with a rich guava aroma, and is one of the best-selling varieties on the market at present. The Xiangmi passion fruit variety has poor cold resistance, and areas with sustained high temperatures and drought in summer will also affect its fruit set, so extra attention should be paid when introducing it.
5. Banana passion fruit
When fully ripe, banana passion fruit is orange-yellow and very similar to a banana, while the inside is much the same as other passion fruit varieties. Compared with several main commercial varieties, banana passion fruit is more cold-tolerant and can withstand low temperatures of -5°C; its fruit is sweeter, with a maximum yield of 400 to 500 fruits, and its flowers are very beautiful, earning it a reputation as one of the most delicious passion fruits. It can bear fruit in the first year of planting, and generally enters the full-production period in the second year.
6. Colombian sweet granadilla
The fruit is round and spherical in shape and golden yellow, and online its price is about 100 yuan per jin, which can be called a terrifying price. It is said that the fruit tastes sweet, not sour, but its aroma is very faint, and some people say its eating quality is not even as good as Mantianxing and golden fruit. According to feedback from some growers in Guangxi, Guangdong and Fujian, it is very difficult to grow and their attempts all failed. Colombian sweet granadilla has very demanding weather requirements: it fears both cold and heat, is prone to disease in summer high temperatures, develops yellow leaves, does not grow, drops leaves, is difficult to manage, and has very low yields.
7. Changhuang 511 passion fruit
The Changhuang 511 variety is fairly adaptable, with relatively large fruit, relatively high yield, excellent quality and a relatively high juice yield. It flowers and fruits several times each year in February and September, can flower and set fruit naturally without artificial pollination, and produces many large, delicious fruits, with strong cold resistance. When ripe, the rind is bright yellow, and the fruit is relatively large and round with fairly obvious star-shaped speckles, with an average single-fruit weight of 80-100 grams.
8. Jilong No. 1
Jilong No. 1 is a purple (red) duck-egg (spherical) passion fruit variety. It grows fast and flowers in the same year it is planted. Its self-pollination fruit-setting rate is as high as more than 80%, 50 to 70 percentage points higher than other varieties introduced from elsewhere in recent years, and it does not require artificial pollination. In the same year, the yield per plant is 10-30 kg, which can double in the second year and reach 100-250 kg in the third to fifth years.
9. Huayang No. 1
In South China, the harvest period runs from mid-to-late July to the end of December. The fruit of the Huayang No. 1 passion fruit variety has a soluble solids content of 16.0%, total sugars of 11.1%, reducing sugar content of 7.1%, and total acid content of 3.9%, with a vitamin C content of 14.6 mg per 100 grams of juice.
10. Juwuba
Juwuba passion fruit is coarse-growing and easy to grow, and it can grow almost year-round except that growth is inhibited below zero degrees in winter. It flowers and fruits in the same year, with an average yield per plant of about 33 kg in that year. Its flowering and fruiting period is earlier than that of ordinary varieties: the flowering period is about 15 days earlier, and the fruit ripening period is about 10 days earlier.
