In summer, all kinds of fruits hit the market, and common fruits include grapes, peaches, apples, and so on. As we know, there are many grape varieties with a long history. The famous poet Li Bai once wrote: "Gazing from afar at the Han River, green as a duck's head, just like grapes when they first ferment." Since ancient times, grapes have been a fruit people love. So which provinces are China's ordinary grape production areas mainly in? Let's take a look below.

1. Xinjiang, the kingdom of grapes

Xinjiang is a major grape region, and both its planting area and output show an upward trend. Its growing areas are spread across every part of Xinjiang, with as many as 600 grape varieties planted. Most grapes belong to the Eurasian species, and nearly 20 kinds have formed a certain cultivated area. In cultivation, open-air factory-type trellises and pergolas are mostly used. Xinjiang belongs to an arid and semi-arid climate zone and mainly relies on river water and snow water to irrigate and cultivate grapes. Thanks to the natural terrain, the grapes taste excellent, so Xinjiang grapes are highly favored by dealers in inland China, but logistics costs are a headache.

2. Shaanxi, a rising force

Shaanxi has a history of grape cultivation as long as 2200 years, with distribution in northern Shaanxi, Guanzhong, and southern Shaanxi, and the cultivation area in the Guanzhong region accounts for about 90% of the province's total area. At present, the province's grape area reaches 738,000 mu, mainly concentrated in 28 counties and districts including Xi'an, Xianyang, Baoji, Weinan, Yan'an, Tongchuan, and Yangling. Hutai No. 8 and Red Globe are Shaanxi's main cultivated varieties, while Zaofeng, Qingti, Jumeigui, Xinghuawang, Shine Muscat, and Jingya are supporting grape varieties, and fresh grapes can be marketed every month.

3. Hebei, an old grape-producing region

Hebei is an old grape-growing province. As of 2016, Hebei's total grape planting area reached more than 1.3 million mu, basically distributed in every city across the province. The main production areas are the Shacheng production area and the Changli production area. The Shacheng production area belongs to a warm semi-arid region, including Huailai, Xuanhua, and Zhuolu, and is part of the Sangyang Basin; the basin's unique climate characteristics are excellent conditions for grape growth; the Changli production area has a semi-humid continental climate, and its sunshine, rainfall, and day-night temperature difference are all very similar to those of Bordeaux, France's wine-producing region, and it has long been known as the "hometown of flowers and fruits."

4. Shandong, a wine-producing area

Shandong Province's total grape area is about more than 600,000 mu, with an output of more than 1.2 million tons, and cultivation is distributed across 118 county-level areas, with planting in almost every city. The larger areas include Yantai, Qingdao, and Zibo, among which Yantai city ranks first with 46,000 mu. The brand value of Yantai wine is 90.506 billion, second only to Moutai, ranking second among national geographical indication products in the alcohol and beverage category, and it is China's number one regional wine brand. Shandong Province has rich grape varieties. Table grapes include Kyoho, Red Earth, Muscat Hamburg, Longyan, and Niunai, mainly distributed in Pingdu, Yiyuan, Linyi, and other places in central and western Shandong, among which the largest variety is still Kyoho, with an area of about 100,000 mu.

5. Yunnan, the earliest marketing production area

Yunnan has sufficient sunlight and abundant heat, giving it an absolute climatic advantage for grape cultivation. It is the region where grapes ripen earliest in the country and has a relatively large early-maturing table grape advantage. As of the end of 2015, Yunnan's total grape cultivation area was 560,000 mu, with a total output of 1 million tons. In recent years, Yunnan's grape sales market has been relatively stable, with 10%-15% sold to foreign markets such as Russia and Southeast Asia; 75%-80% mainly sold in large and medium-sized domestic cities such as Guangzhou, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Shanghai, and Wuhan; and 5%-15% sold locally in the local market.

6. Henan, with scattered planting areas

Every city and county in Henan has plantings, among which the largest planting areas are mainly in Shangqiu, Luoyang, Xinyang, and other places, and among them Luoyang Yanshi has the largest planting scale. In addition, Minquan grapes, as a local geographical indication product, have the largest planting area among counties nationwide and have been listed as a national high-quality grape commodity production base county. Henan is located inland, and its geographical indication advantage is weak; in a strict sense, it is a secondary advantageous production area for grapes. The vast majority of Henan's cultivation is open-field cultivation, accounting for more than 95%, while rain-shelter cultivation is more common in the Xinyang area. In recent years, more and more growers have realized the importance of rain-shelter cultivation, and it is estimated to increase by about 2,000 mu per year.

In addition to the provinces introduced above, other provinces also have grape planting industries, only on a smaller scale than the other provinces. When it comes to grapes, many people's first impression is Xinjiang. Regarding grape planting by province, is there anything else you would like to add?
