Jackfruit is one of the more common fruits in Hainan. The fruit is huge, with a distinctive aroma and a sweet, crisp, refreshing texture that is also soft, smooth and luscious. There are many varieties of jackfruit, with more than 30 varieties that differ slightly in taste, mainly divided into two major categories: firm-fleshed (dry-bulb) and soft-fleshed (wet-bulb). Currently the most popular on the market are varieties such as Malaysia No. 1 and Malaysia No. 5. Below, the editor will introduce several of the more popular jackfruit varieties.

1. Malaysia No. 1

Because of its good promotion results, Malaysia No. 1 was named "Qiongyin No. 1" jackfruit by the Hainan Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee. This variety generally begins to bear fruit after 2 years, and with scientific management it can bear fruit and be marketed in all four seasons. At present, it is widely planted in Sanya and other places in Hainan, with very high yields.

Its single fruit generally weighs 8 kg to 10 kg, with the largest reaching 15 kg to 20 kg, and the extra-large ones can reach 30-50 kg. Its flesh is yellow-red, with many large bulbs, a crisp and sweet taste, and a rich aroma. It also has less latex, so it does not easily stick to your hands when eaten.

2. Malaysia No. 5

Malaysia No. 5 jackfruit was introduced from Selangor state in Malaysia. This variety generally begins to bear fruit 2 years after planting, and is now mainly distributed in Xilian and Xipei farms in Danzhou City, and in townships such as Qiongshan in Haikou, Qionghai, and Chengmai.

This variety has large fruit, with an average single fruit of 12-16 kg. It belongs to the dry-bulb jackfruit type. When ripe, it has little latex, and the flesh color is mostly brown-red, though there are also varieties with yellow flesh. The flesh is thick with few fibers, crisp and refreshing, and suitable for fresh eating.

3. Thailand Red Flesh No. 8

Thailand Red Flesh No. 8 jackfruit was introduced from Thailand. A 3-year-old jackfruit tree can bear 100 kg of fruit per tree each year. It is now mainly distributed in Xilian and Xipei farms in Danzhou City, and in townships such as Qiongshan in Haikou, Qionghai, Sanya, Chengmai, and Shiyuetian in Changjiang.

This variety has large fruit, with an average single fruit of 10-12 kg, and a taste that is sweet without being cloying. Unlike ordinary jackfruit, its bulbs are reddish in color, and its price is also more expensive than other jackfruit varieties. It only needs to be planted for 18 months to bear fruit, and its yield is considerable.

Besides the several jackfruit varieties introduced above, Hainan also has common varieties such as Thailand Middle Leaf, Malaysia No. 6, and Vietnam Red Flesh. Jackfruit is a treasure from head to toe. Its flesh and honey strands can be eaten directly, and can also be made into dishes. Its seeds can also be boiled in water and eaten, with a taste similar to chestnuts. So do you like eating jackfruit?
