Many people love eating mutton, especially in winter, when it warms the body as you eat, and mutton is also a rather tasty type of meat. China has many kinds of sheep, so today the editor will introduce China's eight excellent sheep breeds and explain their characteristics in detail.

Characteristics of China's eight excellent sheep breeds:

1. Hu sheep

The Hu sheep is the only multi-fetal white lambskin sheep breed in the world, mainly distributed in the Taihu Lake basin of Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Hu sheep have a long, narrow head and face, a raised nose bridge, large drooping ears, and both rams and ewes are hornless. They are generally kept in pens and are shorn once each in spring and autumn. Lambs are slaughtered within 3 days of birth to strip the lambskin, which is thin, light, and pure white, with wavy patterns like flowing water and drifting clouds; it is a superior raw material for making reversible women's coats and enjoys a high reputation on the international market, where it is praised as a "soft gem." Hu sheep wool is also an important raw material for the local rope-making and carpet industries.

2. Tan sheep

The Tan sheep belongs to the Mongolian sheep system and is a famous fur-producing sheep. It is mainly distributed in the Helan Mountain area of Ningxia. Its body wool is white, with very few pure black individuals; the head, area around the eyes, cheeks, ears, and muzzle often have brown or black patches or spots. The build is medium-sized, and rams have spiral horns. Tan sheep wool is white and fine (black wool is glossy black), full of elasticity, with fine, long, and uniform fibers; each hair has more than 6 crimps, making it a superior raw material for processing uniform cloth and overcoat cloth. The lambskin taken from lambs 30 to 45 days after birth is even lighter and more attractive, with a pleasing luster, and 8 to 10 lambskins can make one fur coat. Tan sheep meat is tender and delicious.

3. Tibetan sheep

Tibetan sheep are mainly distributed on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The wool is white, with no black spots on the head or between the limbs. Both rams and ewes have horns. The tail is small and cone-shaped. The coarse hair is 23 cm long and the down hair is 8 cm long; it is a famous carpet-wool sheep. Because of its small tail, it walks relatively quickly and is suited to life in high-altitude cold regions of 3,000 to 4,500 m, where it can graze year-round.

4. Small-tailed Han sheep

The Small-tailed Han sheep is a breed unique to China, mainly distributed in parts of Shandong, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu, and other provinces. It has relatively long limbs, a long head and neck, a tall body, and a raised nose bridge. It has characteristics such as early maturity, fast early growth and development, a tall build, good meat quality, estrus in all four seasons, strong reproductive capacity, and stable heredity. In terms of wool fineness, strength, elongation, grease, and color quality, it has reached very high quality standards and is a hot commodity on the international market.

7. Northeast fine-wool sheep

The Northeast fine-wool sheep is the second dual-purpose wool-and-meat fine-wool sheep developed by China itself. It originated in Northeast China and was bred by crossing rams such as Stavropol sheep, former Soviet Merino sheep, and Xinjiang fine-wool sheep with local ewes. Rams have horns, while ewes are hornless. The body is tall, and the neck has folds. Adult rams weigh more than 90 kg, and ewes about 50 kg.
