Plums are a common fruit, and one that many people enjoy eating. There are many plum varieties on the market, and different varieties differ in appearance and price. So what plum varieties are there? When does each variety hit the market? Let's find out.

1. Cherry plum

Cherry plum is a cross between the traditional plum and the cherry; its fruit is somewhat larger than a traditional cherry, and its shape falls between a cherry and a plum. A ripe cherry plum looks like a small, fully reddened plum, dainty and shapely. It comes on the market from mid-June to early October; because its shelf life is very short, it is rather expensive.

2. Apricot plum

Apricot plum is a fruit produced by crossing the plum with the apricot; it is a type of honey plum from the United States, also known as dinosaur egg. The skin of the apricot plum is purplish red, so it is also called red plum, and it is somewhat larger than the black plum. Its fruit is brightly colored and richly fragrant, with yellow flesh that is tender and fine, low in fiber and small in stone; in recent years it has become a prized fruit popular around the world.

3. Black plum

The black plum is a new premium fruit variety bred from hybrids of the Chinese plum and the European plum. It has overcome the Chinese plum's drawbacks of easily splitting, strong astringency, being hard to digest and dull color, and is deeply welcomed by consumers for its unusual shape, brilliant color, sweet flavor and relatively good storability. It comes on the market in early June.

4. Honey plum

The honey plum is so named because its fruit is as sweet as honey; the fruit is large and sweet, with pale yellow flesh, an average single-fruit weight of 35.3 g, soluble solids of 17.8%, a freestone habit and an oval stone; it ripens in early to mid-June in the Chengdu area.

5. Green crisp plum

The green crisp plum is fresh green before it ripens and turns slightly fresh green-yellow once ripe; the single fruit weighs about 1-2 liang, and the surface has a little bloom. Its texture is crisp, the stone is small and the flesh is thick, and the unique climate and sunshine conditions give the green crisp plum its distinctive flavor, making it much loved. Green crisp plums ripen successively from mid-July to late September.

6. Sanhua plum

The Sanhua plum, also known as big honey plum, chicken hemp plum and little honey plum, is one of the most renowned famous and specialty fruits of the Guangdong region, with a recorded cultivation history of nearly five hundred years. The Sanhua plum is green at first, gradually turning red and taking on a light purple tinge. A ripe Sanhua plum has a layer of "white frost" on its surface. The Sanhua plum comes on the market around mid-June.

7. Peach-shaped plum

The peach-shaped plum is one of the famous, special, superior and rare fruit trees of Pujiang County, Jinhua City, and once won a gold award at the National Agricultural Fair. The fruit surface is dark red with a white waxy layer, the edible rate is as high as 97.8%, and the ripening period is at the end of July and the beginning of August.

8. Nai plum

The Nai plum originates from Fujian Province, China. The Nai plum has thin skin, thick flesh and a small stone, with a fresh, pleasant taste and rich nutrition. But the Nai plum stores poorly; its harvest period coincides with the high summer temperatures, and usually 3-5 days after picking it softens and rots, with an extremely high rate of spoiled fruit. So good preservation is essential. It comes on the market from mid-July to early August.

Of course, besides the varieties mentioned above, there are many more plum varieties, and whether in nutritional value or taste they are all very good. As for plums, which variety is your favorite?
