Five Common Self-Fertile Large Cherry Varieties

1. Santina

Released in 1996 by the trial station of the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre of Canada, its parents are Stella and Summit. It is a mainly promoted early-maturing variety in Canada. Self-fertile fruit set, high and stable yield are its advantages. Main economic traits: the tree posture is open, with fairly strong central leader; the fruiting branches are mainly flower-bouquet spurs and short fruiting branches, and the flower buds are medium to large and plump; the fruit is medium to large, with an average single fruit weight of 7.6-9.0 grams, oval in shape, a medium-long fruit stalk, black skin, firm flesh, sweet taste, and medium-to-upper quality, with a soluble solids content of 15.1%; resistant to fruit cracking; mid-early maturing, with a development period of about 50 days, ripening 8-10 days earlier than Van, and harvested in mid-to-late May in the Tai'an area.

2. Lapins

This cherry variety was bred through crossing and selection. It is a sister line of Summit. At present it is grown in relatively large quantities worldwide. This variety is a self-fertile late-maturing variety and is one of the key promoted varieties in Canada. The fruit is large, with a single fruit weight of 8 grams, and large fruits reaching 12 grams. The fruit shape is nearly round or oval. The fruit stalk is medium-long and medium-thick. When ripe, the skin is purplish red with an attractive glossy sheen, and it is attractive in appearance; the skin is thick and tough, the flesh is light red, plump, fairly firm and juicy, with good flavor and top-grade quality. It contains 16.5% soluble solids. It ripens in mid-to-late June in Yantai. When ripe, the fruit stalk does not detach easily, so it can be picked appropriately later; the fruit stalk dehydrates relatively slowly and does not wilt easily. This variety has a vigorous tree vigor, a relatively upright tree posture, well-developed lateral branches, and a tree structure with good fruit set. It is fairly cold-tolerant. Self-fertile, with a large amount of pollen, it can pollinate any variety with the same flowering period, and is a broad pollen provider. Its early fruiting and high-yielding performance are very outstanding, and it produces high yields year after year, is resistant to fruit cracking, and is free of viral diseases.

3. Black Pearl

The color ranges from red to deep red to purple-black; when red, it can be harvested and sold. It tastes sweet, the flesh is firm, and it ripens on June 14 in Yantai.

4. Sunburst

A Canadian variety, bred by crossing Van and Stella, self-fertile, with extra-large fruit, average single fruit weight 13.1 grams, maximum up to 22.5 grams, deep red fruit color, good fruit flavor, relatively storage-tolerant, and a very promising variety for cultivation.

5. Longguan

A new cherry variety; the fruit is large, with an average single fruit weight of 6.8 grams and a maximum of up to 12 grams. The fruit shape is broad heart-shaped. It was bred by the Zhengzhou Fruit Tree Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences by crossing Napoleon and Big Purple. In May 1996 it passed the approval of the Henan Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee.
