Now that people's living standards have improved and their cultural knowledge has grown, many people today want to experience a different kind of fun in life, so they keep ornamental fish. But ornamental fish come in many diverse species, divided into temperate freshwater ornamental fish, tropical freshwater ornamental fish, tropical marine ornamental fish, cold-water ornamental fish and so on. A few of each are introduced below.

I. Temperate Freshwater Ornamental Fish

1. Tiger Barb

The tiger barb is lively and active, has low demands on water quality, likes to swim in the middle layer of the water, and grows well at a water temperature of 22-26°C. Kept in groups, tiger barbs swim in formation in the tank, which is quite a spectacular sight.

2. Calico Lionhead Goldfish

The calico lionhead goldfish has a short body, bright colors, and a head tumor whose top is slightly trapezoidal; its well-developed head tumor is like that of a male lion. When it swims, its fins and tail spread out like a dance in ancient costume as a heavenly maiden scatters flowers, charming and graceful. Many people fall in love with it because of its graceful posture and large head tumor.

3. Koi

Koi have a robust build, brilliant colors, varied patterns and a majestic swimming style, making them a fish species with extremely high ornamental and keeping value. Koi are gentle by nature, like to swim in groups, and are easy to keep; they can generally be fed ordinary food or artificial pellet bait.

II. Tropical Freshwater Ornamental Fish

1. Arowana

The arowana attracts much attention for its armor-like scales that flash with a metallic luster, its bright colors and its awe-inspiring bearing, making it one of the most precious ornamental fish. Arowanas are fierce by nature, and when eating they may strike with such force that they hit the tank and injure themselves, so it is best to drop food in the middle of the tank when feeding.

2. Oscar

The most interesting thing about the oscar is that it is the most affectionate of tropical fish; they can even recognize the owner who has kept them for a long time. Oscars are relatively large in size and slow-moving, and their habits are not fierce, but their appetite is astonishing and they are very greedy; they will swallow almost any acceptable bait.

3. Kissing Gourami

The kissing gourami is a small ornamental fish among ornamental fish species and is famous for the fish's fondness for "kissing" each other; it is loved by fish keepers for symbolizing lasting love. In fact, the kissing gourami's "kiss" is not an expression of affection but a form of fighting.

III. Tropical Marine Ornamental Fish

1. Clownfish

The clownfish has one or two white stripes on its face, just like the clown role in Peking opera, with bright colors and a cute appearance. Clownfish like to hide among sea anemones, using the anemone's stinging cells to protect themselves, forming a symbiotic relationship with the anemone.

2. Seahorse

The seahorse is the collective name for several small warm-sea fish species of the family Syngnathidae in the order Gasterosteiformes, named for its bent head that forms an almost right angle with its body. When keeping seahorses, the water flow should be gentle, and a 10% water change should be ensured every week. Generally, the water temperature for keeping seahorses should be controlled at 20-26°C. Seahorses only accept live marine fish and shrimp, and small river shrimp from the market can also be used as a substitute.

IV. Cold-Water Ornamental Fish

1. Goldfish

As an ornamental fish that symbolizes a house full of gold and jade, the goldfish is colorful, gentle in temperament and diverse in varieties, and is deeply loved. Goldfish can be fed earthworms, white sesame seeds, water fleas, earthworms, yellow mealworms, green worms, leather worms and so on.

2. Chinese Fighting Fish

The Chinese fighting fish is the most common of the fork-tailed fighting fish. It likes to move about in shallow puddles or along banks dense with aquatic plants. It is beautiful in appearance and color and can be kept as an ornamental fish. The Chinese fighting fish has low demands on water quality and can grow well even in dirty water at a water temperature of 20~25 degrees; it can generally survive within 4~31°C, and a water temperature of 24~27°C is most suitable for its growth.

The above is an introduction to some species of ornamental fish. Different species of ornamental fish differ in their living environment and keeping methods, so if you want to keep them alive, you need to pay attention to the breeding methods.
