When it comes to longhorn beetles, it is believed to be a childhood memory for many people. As children, we often caught longhorn beetles with our friends, which was great fun. Only after growing up did we realize how serious the damage caused by these pests is: they mainly bore into the xylem of fruit trees, as well as the bark of young twigs and leaves. There are also many species of longhorn beetles; more than 200 species are known in our country. So what leaves do longhorn beetles eat? What are the common species of longhorn beetles? Let's find out together.

What leaves do longhorn beetles eat?

Longhorn beetles generally like to eat the tender leaves of white poplar, tree of heaven and plane trees, etc. If you are raising longhorn beetles and cannot find these leaves, you can prepare some apple, cucumber or honey, etc.

Common species of longhorn beetles

1. Citrus longhorn beetle

The citrus longhorn beetle is a longhorn beetle unique to Japan, China and South Korea. Each female citrus longhorn beetle can lay up to 200 eggs from a single mating, and each egg is hidden separately in the bark. When the larvae hatch, they chew into the tree, creating a tunnel used for pupation. From egg-laying to pupation and adulthood can take 12 to 18 months. The citrus longhorn beetle can harm many kinds of trees, including poplar, willow, elm, London plane, jujube and chestnut.

2. Mulberry longhorn beetle

The mulberry longhorn beetle is distributed in Beijing, Tianjin, Hunan, Hebei, Liaoning, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Sichuan, Jiangxi, Taiwan, China, Hainan, Shanxi, Shaanxi and other provinces. The adults feed on the bark and leaves of tender twigs. The larvae live under the bark of branches and trunks and in the xylem, boring downward; the tunnel contains no frass, and at certain intervals they bore an opening to the outside for ventilation and to expel frass, discharging large amounts of frass, weakening the tree's vigor and, in severe cases, causing it to die.

3. Asian longhorn beetle

The Asian longhorn beetle, also known as the Asian long-horned beetle, is an important forestry pest, causing large losses of timber every year. It is black with a glossy sheen, 20 to 35 mm long and 7 to 12 mm wide, with 11-segmented antennae and a blue-black base; each elytron has about 20 white spots. Its hosts are plane trees, willow, poplar and others. The larvae bore into the trunk; mild damage reduces timber quality, while severe damage can cause the tree top to wither and the tree to break in the wind.

4. Red-edged longhorn beetle

The red-edged longhorn beetle is distributed in Beijing, Northeast China, Hebei, Shanxi, Henan, Zhejiang and other places. Its hosts include flowering almond, yellowhorn, plum blossom, goji, grape, Chinese golden larch, apple, pagoda tree, elm and tree of heaven, etc. The larvae bore and cause damage; in mild cases the plant's growth vigor weakens and some branches and trunks die, while in severe cases the trunk is girdled and stripped of bark, the crown dies, and the trunk breaks in the wind.

The above is an introduction to the feeding habits and species of longhorn beetles. Of course, there are still very many species of longhorn beetles, and their living habits also differ greatly. If you are interested in raising them, you should also determine the species according to the rearing conditions.
