What to Do When Lucky Bamboo's Roots Turn Black? Causes and Solutions
1. Not changing the water for a long time
Many people grow it in water, but when growing it they forget that the water needs to be changed after a period of time. Although it likes still water and normally does not need water changes, if the water is not changed for several months, too much metabolic waste accumulates in the water and oxygen is lacking, which will affect it and cause its roots to turn black.
Solution:
First, what we need to do is deal with the blackened parts; they can be cut off with scissors. What must be emphasized here is that they must be removed completely, with nothing left behind. After that, what we need to do is change the water. At this point we need to make sure the water quality is good, and then remember to change the water on time.
In addition, we should also soak the bamboo body in diluted potassium permanganate to disinfect it. Here we need to get the dilution ratio right; the solution must not turn purple, it only needs to show a watermelon-red color. After completing this step, rinse it off with clean water, then change the water to grow it. Generally, what we need to use is added purified water or cooled boiled water.
2. Infection
If it is not cared for properly in normal times and becomes infected by some pathogens, this can also cause its roots to turn black.
Solution:
At this time, what we need to do is cut off the infected parts. The point we need to pay special attention to here is that the blackened area we see is not necessarily the infected area, so we should pinch it with our hands; if there is a place that feels soft, that also needs to be cut off.
Our cut has one requirement, which is that it needs to stay white and clean. After that, we need to put it in a ventilated place until the wound dries. Finally, we can put it back in the bottle for normal care.
3. Fertilizing
Not paying attention when fertilizing can also produce this phenomenon.
Solution:
At this point, what we need to do is add some brandy to it every three weeks; the amount does not need to be much, a few drops will do. In addition, we can also use some vitamin C. This can improve its condition to a large extent, but whether it can cure it completely is unknown.
