What types of charcoal are there? A detailed introduction to the uses of each type of charcoal
Charcoal is a relatively common agricultural material in our country, with many types. Friends engaged in the charcoal industry all know that in the charcoal market, the quality requirements for charcoal differ under different uses. Even for the same use, different regions have somewhat different requirements for charcoal. So what types and uses does charcoal have?
1. Wood charcoal
Wood charcoal is a porous substance, and a porous substance inevitably has a very large surface area. The larger the surface area of a substance, the more molecules of other substances it adsorbs, and the stronger its adsorption effect. If high-temperature steam is continuously introduced during the production of wood charcoal to remove the oily matter adhering to the surface of the wood charcoal and clear the countless internal channels, then the surface area of the wood charcoal will be even larger. Wood charcoal processed in this way is called activated carbon. Obviously, activated carbon has a stronger adsorption effect than wood charcoal.
2. Coke
Bituminous coal is heated to 950-1050°C under air-isolated conditions, and through stages such as drying, pyrolysis, melting, bonding, solidification and shrinkage, coke is finally produced. This process is called high-temperature coking (high-temperature dry distillation). The coke obtained from high-temperature coking is used in blast furnace smelting, casting and gasification. The coke oven gas produced during the coking process, after recovery and purification, is both a high-calorific-value fuel and an important raw material for the organic synthesis industry.
3. Activated carbon
Activated carbon is a very excellent adsorbent. It is made from raw materials such as wood charcoal, bamboo charcoal, various nut shells and high-quality coal, processed through a series of procedures including physical and chemical methods such as crushing, sieving, catalyst activation, rinsing, drying and screening. It has the dual characteristics of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption, and can selectively adsorb various substances in the gas phase and liquid phase, so as to achieve purposes such as decolorization and refining (sucrose decolorization), disinfection and deodorization, and decontamination and purification. Burning before use can improve its adsorption effect; the principle is that burning can completely combust the grease or other substances attached inside its internal channels, increasing its surface area. Testing standards can follow China's national standard GB, or other national standards, such as: US ASTM, Japanese JIS, German DIN standards, etc.
4. Carbon black
Carbon black is an amorphous form of carbon. A light, loose and extremely fine black powder with a very large surface area, ranging from 10-3000m2/g, it is the product obtained from organic substances (natural gas, heavy oil, fuel oil, etc.) through incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition under conditions of insufficient air. Specific gravity 1.8-2.1. That made from natural gas is called "gas black", that made from oils is called "lamp black", and that made from acetylene is called "acetylene black". In addition, there are "channel black" and "furnace black". According to performance, carbon black can be distinguished as "reinforcing carbon black", "conductive carbon black", "wear-resistant carbon black", etc. It can be used as a black dye for making Chinese ink, printing ink, paint, etc., and is also used as a reinforcing agent for rubber to improve the wear resistance and tear resistance of rubber, and is filled into tires and rubber shoe soles.
The above is an introduction to the types of charcoal. Charcoal has many uses and, to a certain extent, is of great help to us. Regarding the types of charcoal introduced by the editor above, is there anything else you would like to know?
