An introduction to turmeric's producing areas and varieties

Turmeric originated in India, with a history of about 6,000 years, and was introduced to China around 700 AD (Tang Dynasty), making it an imported product. Turmeric comes from the rhizome (root) of plants in the ginger family, genus Curcuma. It is green, with oval leaves and light yellow flowers, and when mature the plant can grow to 1 m tall. It has a spicy and bitter taste, with a light pungent aroma, and a slight hint of pepper, musk, and a mixed flavor of sweet orange and ginger.

Besides the main producing area of India (with the Cochin region being the best in India), it is also distributed in Qianwei County, Leshan, Sichuan, and in Luchun County and Jinping County of Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan, among other areas in China. The main varieties of turmeric are as follows:

① In Japan, it is divided into white turmeric, spring turmeric, autumn turmeric, and purple turmeric;

② In Taiwan, China, it is divided into yellow turmeric, red turmeric, and purple turmeric;

③ In China, it is generally just called turmeric broadly, and according to its medicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine it is divided into turmeric, Yujin (Curcuma wenyujin), and Ezhu (Curcuma zedoaria).

Turmeric's medicinal effects

The main active ingredient of turmeric is curcumin. Over the past 20 years, research on curcumin has been carried out vigorously, and scientists around the world have conducted many studies at the cellular, animal, and clinical trial levels. About 4,500 papers on curcumin have been published in various scientific journals around the world.

These papers cover the pharmacological effects of curcumin in many aspects: such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cancer prevention and anti-cancer, neuroprotection such as against Alzheimer's disease and against autism in children, repairing and protecting liver function, antiviral such as anti-HIV, anti-cardiovascular disease, anti-autoimmune disease, and so on.

Overall, turmeric, also known as Yujin, is, like red pepper, a spice with a coloring effect, and medicinal turmeric generally refers to its rhizome, which looks very much like ginger, but there are still many differences between turmeric and ginger, and there are also many varieties of turmeric, so everyone must be good at distinguishing them when buying.
